I'm so sorry I did not learn of the news in time to come to the funeral. Don meant a lot to my development as a musician while he as teacher at Austin Jr. High School. The lessons he taught in music theory are the specific reason I majored in music theory and composition.I am a professional composer now. Also, his encouragement in my efforts at playing the viola in his Austin Jr.High orchestra is the reason I continued playing the instrument in college, in the symphony, and I still play today. Thanks, Mr. Knapp!
Love,
Barbara Mabry Hagen

In the sixth grade at Giles Elementary there were "tryouts" to be in the band or orchestra. I thought I wanted to play the violin for some reason, but Mr. Knapp convinced me to learn to play cornet in the band. He was my first and third band director at Giles and Memorial, and also taught me private lessons in which he showed the patience and kindness that all teachers should have with their students. His inspiration resulted in many pleasant band experiences for me throughout high school and college......I am proud to have known him.
