What a great loss for journalism and the world. Richard was a one-of-a-kind man, capable of wit, humor, sarcasm, sympathy, kindness, and amazing humanity all at the appropriate times. He will be greatly missed. My sympathies to his family and many loved ones. Wednesday, September 21, 2011 |

Richard was a great friend who opened the door to my career and a lifetime of friends when he hired me as a kid reporter at the Daily Cougar. Years later when I tried to thank him for that decision that made such a difference in my life, he confessed that he and sports editor Steve Pate took all the Cougar applications, tossed them up in the air and whichever ones landed face up, they hired. I still here him laughing at the absurdity of it all. Rest in peace, Richard. Wednesday, September 21, 2011 |

Please accept my sincerest sympathy. Richard was a dear friend and fellow journalist. When I hired him at the Houston Chronicle to cover the Beaumont area, I knew I had a treasure. He was a great reporter, an even better story teller. I used to start my mornings with a smile because he sent in notes full of funny stories and sweet wonderful tales of his joy at being a father. The last time I talked to him, he also talked of the joys of his grandchildren and his new family. I share your sadness at this time. He was a good friend. Wednesday, September 21, 2011 |
