I first became acquainted with Steve in 1969 when he and I were on the same coaching staff at King High School in Corpus Christi, TX. He was the offensive and defensive line coach, and I was the head baseball coach. We became good friends, and when he was offered the head football coaching position at French High School, he asked me to come to Beaumont and be one of his football coaches and head baseball coach. We continued to work together and be friends even after I left the coaching field to enter the administration area of education. Retirement gave us opportunities to play golf together many times—and occasionally gave me an opportunity to help him “punch cows!” Through the years I have considered Steve to be that rare find in life, a good and respected friend. He was an inspiration and honor to the coaching profession. I will miss him. Sunday, March 3, 2013 |

Forty-seven years ago I met Dee Dee at a Del Valle football game where Mike was Steve's four-year old mascot. You, Dee Dee, were having your first date with Coach Shaver -- and it wasn't to be the last. What memorable years we have shared together at Del Valle and at French! God bless you and your family.
