Coach Shave was a real inspiration to a lot of us North End guys to stay in sports and strive to do the BEST we could. He loved seeing us reach our potential and he put together a group of coaches during my years at French 82-86 that taught me values and ethic that I still use and apply to all things today. He had a way with words on the field and in the huddle that still today.... me and my teamates and those that were older than me still laugh about and use in everyday talk. I will forever cherish those memories on the football field with Coach Shave and my best friends and teamates... RIP....and to Mrs. Shaver, Shannon, Steve and David....I hope God gives you all the strength to get thru the next phase in your lives and the ability to gain strength on all the GREAT Memories that you all shared as a family. My prayers are with you all. Monday, March 4, 2013 |

Dee Dee, I think that we have never met. So let me tell you a beautiful story about Steve. I'm Wayne Brasher from Eagle Lake, TX. Steve was a Freshman at ELHS when I was a Senior. ELHS was a class A school back in that season of 1954. In Texas, the only thing smaller was class B and six-man football. Steve stood about 5'6" at that time (I know, I know, you would need pictures to believe that, but it's true) BUT - he was about the same diminsion WIDE Sometimes we didn't have 22 players show up for practice so we did the best that we could with what we had. Steve NEVER missed a practice. I know because I was the QB and I never missed a practice. Our RUNNING OVER and around Steve then is a fixture in my memory. As I remember, Steve never got into a game his freshman year. After my graduation in 1955 I went off to college and then into the Army. All this is to say that the next time I saw Steve was at a Christmas party in Eagle Lake several years later. I was aware that the family had moved from Eagle Lake and that Steve had gone to Bellaire High School in Houston. Now, back to the party - I saw this HULK at the party but I did not recognize him from the back. When he turned around and walked toward me, I saw the face and still couldn't place it, but I knew that I knew it. Steve was in his senior year at Sam Houston then and his simple statement to me was, "Well, Wayne, you want to try to run over me now?" I was still smart enough (being the QB, of course) to respond, "No thank you, SIR." He was a good man - but no one knows that more than you and your family. God speed recovery for your grief - Steve is up there trying to get that 3-4 defense lined out. Wayne Monday, March 4, 2013 |

Words are hard to find that will express what the loss of Steve means to so many. He was bigger than life and his influence on his students and friends cannot be measured. Each has their own memory of him and what he meant to them. Just to hear his name brings a smile to each of us as we remember the good times and stories that he was a part of. May his family find comfort in that knowledge and know how much he was loved by all.
Thank you Steve for being a part of our lives and the memories you left us. Connie and Charlie Monday, March 4, 2013 |
