Sam Smith (Winnie, TX)

To all of Durwood's family,
I am so saddened to learn of Durwood's passing. We knew each other in an around the Beaumont area for years and then miraculously when I joined the Air Force and was sent to France I ran into Durwood. Gosh it was so good to see a friend. I had many pictures of him in his uniform, but we lost our home and everything in Hurricane Ike in 2008. I wished I could see those old pictures full of so many memories just one more time. Thank you for including pictures of him in the service. Durwood was a fine man and a wonderful and caring individual. I am so sorry he and I lost touch over the years. My prayers are with each of you. God bless you all at this time and always.

Dear Papa,
You're are so very special in our lives; you've touched each one of us specifically and purposefully. I want to thank you for the love, encouragement, and wisdom you have given us over the years. I can still remember how exciting it was to hear about the stories of you fighting for our country over seas, or the stories of you finding the bullet hole in the roof years after dad had made it or one of the many many flying stories...or even the fun stories about the good old days of teaching biology and driving the school bus. I have to admit when Sean and I came to see you two summers ago, and we went to the track star museum, the botanic garden, and then drove around and saw the High school, childhood homes, and more great stuff...that was one of my personal favorite adventurers with you. With all of our gun shooting photos from last Christmas I'm pretty sure that none of your grandkids could ever run for political office (not that any of us would) --That was a great day!!...
I guess what I'm trying to say is I love you with all my heart and I miss you so much. I've been praying for you a lot lately. I pray that you are not hurting and that you have the peace that passes all understanding. I pray that you know how very loved you are and that you're are the best Papa in the whole wide world.
I love you with all my heart!
