Gilbert "Gil James" Villafano, Jr.
November 30, 1952 - May 11, 2010
Richard Bravo (San Antonio, TX)

To Gil's extended family - I'm so sorry for this huge loss. Gil and I were very close friends back in the 70's, until our careers took us in different directions. We used to hang-out together, practice together and we even played together in a couple of pop bands. I have many fond memories of our times together. It seems like it was always good times that would never end.

Gil was a great friend to me and I'll have to say to everyone he met. We were both passionate about our trumpet playing and performing. He was quite a competitor too! I was a couple of years older than he so as a young trumpet player he took to calling me "The King". It made me feel really, really special... especially after he started developing his super chops! I always felt like I needed to return the compliment so in his honor I would like to say that Gil has truly been "The King".

I always thought that I would have time to visit with Gil and talk about the fun, old times. This happened entirely too soon. He had a way of creating good vibes and good friends wherever he went. I envy those of you who remained close to him. He is one of the great ones!

Please feel free to contact me - I would like to know more.

God bless you all.

This can't be true...it is just unbelievable. Gil was a great person, friend, and perhaps one the greatest trumpet players, vocalist and performers of this area. This is a sad day. We will miss you friend, you left us far too early. Our prayers are with the family.

David Shannon (Atlanta, GA)

I was stunned to learn this morning of Gilbert's death. He was one of my very best friends from the fifth grade until we both graduated high school together in 1970.

Gil and I both played trumpet in the Vidor school bands. My first "professional" gig was with him and his band in a talent contest in Vidor when we were in the sixth or seventh grade. We took second place! In the years that followed, we enjoyed playing together -- and competing against each other!!! -- on many occasions.

I pray the God of peace will comfort you, his family and friends, as you mourn the loss of your loved one.
