Reverend Kevin Sumler, 58, of Beaumont, died Tuesday, July 23, 2013. Fr. Kevin was the third child of six born and raised in Houston, Texas, on November 23, 1954, to Mary Catherine Perkins Sumler and Alton Edward Sumler. He attended St. Thomas University where he majored in Philosophy and later attended St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston and also St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana.
Fr. Kevin served in various parishes including St. Mary Parish in Orange and Port Arthur; Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Beaumont; he served as Pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in China; as well as St. James Catholic Church in Port Arthur. He took a medical retirement but continued to exercise his priestly ministries in Prison Ministry; scripture study group, and Cenacle group. Fr. Kevin was very passionate about his ministry and had a great love for what he accomplished. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was his heart, soul, and center of his life. He was also very dedicated to his family and never let more than a day go by without conversing with at least one of us regularly.
Fr. Kevin will be deeply missed by his family and friends. We thank everyone for your prayers and how people have touched his life; for we know he definitely touched the lives of many people in the Diocese of Beaumont.
Survivors include his brothers, Reverend Paul Edward Sumler of Vidor; Mark Dwayne Sumler and his wife, Lu, of Houston; and Neal James Sumler of Beaumont; sisters, Marian Sumler Nunley and her husband, Ronnie, of Magnolia and Susan Marie Sumler of Houston; uncle and aunt, Neal Sumler and his wife, Martha, of Silsbee; nephew, Erik Nunley; niece, Christine Nunley; and numerous cousins.
A gathering of Fr. Kevin’s family and friends will begin at 5:00 p.m., with a Christian Vigil at 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 26, 2013, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 1600 North Main Street, Vidor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, with his graveside service to follow at 3:30 p.m., at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston.
