John H. Powell, 84, died peacefully Sunday, February 26, 2012, at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He was born August 23, 1927, in Doddsville, Mississippi. John was a veteran in the United States Army during World War II as a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. He was president of Conn Appliances for many years. He was also an active member in YMBL and a president of the Lamar University Cardinal Club.
Survivors include his daughters, Susan L. Long and her husband, Tim of Tiki Island and Linda Curry and her husband, Glen, of Glennville, Georgia; grandchildren, Nathan Long of Jacksonville, Florida, Matt Long and his wife, Lindsey of Spring, Alexandra Knock of Richmond, Virginia; great - grandson, Sam Long of Spring; brother, Charles Powell of Jasper; and several nieces, nephews, extended family, and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife of sixty years, Betty Powell; and his daughter, Karen Powell.
A gathering of his family and friends will be Wednesday, February 29, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Broussard's, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 1, 2012, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3810 North Major Drive, Beaumont, with internment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont.
