Dr. D. Elvin Gibson

Elvin was born December 24, 1933, near Malakoff, Texas to John Dewey Gibson and Margie Louise (Rogers) Gibson Farmer. Called to the gospel ministry in 1952, he served as pastor of churches in Broaddus, Jasper, China, and League City from 1957 through 1974.  His last pastorate was Hillcrest Baptist Church in Nederland from 1974 until his retirement in 2000, when he was named pastor emeritus of that church.  In addition to his pastorates, he also served twenty years on the board of directors for Baptist Hospital in Beaumont and held many offices in the various local associations of Baptists in areas where he pastored.  During his “retired” years, he further served as part time chaplain at Baptist Hospital in Beaumont and as interim pastor for several churches in Southeast Texas and the Houston area, in addition to providing pulpit supply throughout the area.

Elvin is survived by his wife of fifty-seven wonderful years, Dorothy Ratcliff Gibson; his daughter, Sherry Jean Kelley and her husband, Keith of Beaumont; his son, Jerry Elvin Gibson of Whitney, Texas; and his sister, Marie Johnson of Malakoff.  His memory is further cherished by his grandchildren, Andrew Gibson, Alaina Pugh and her husband, Brandon, and Alicen Gibson; his great granddaughter, Kynlee Pugh; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A celebration of Elvin’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 3324 Park Drive, Nederland, under the direction of Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland.  Doctor Patrick Hunter and Brother David Cross will conduct the service and the Deacons of Hillcrest Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers.  Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Colmesneil City Cemetery, Colmesneil.  A gathering of his family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at Hillcrest Baptist Church.
