John Michael Green

John Michael Green
August 9, 1941 - April 19, 2011

John Michael Green, Jr. died on April 19, 2011, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 69. He was born in Beaumont, Texas, on August 9, 1942, son of John Michael Green, who preceded him in death, and Dorothy Fontenot Green.

Michael attended St. Anne Grammar School and graduated from St. Anthony High School in 1959, where he was on the varsity football, basketball, and track teams. He studied business administration and finance at the University of Notre Dame, where he was also enrolled in the Navy ROTC program. He graduated in 1963, and was simultaneously commissioned an officer with the rank of Ensign in the United States Navy. It was at Notre Dame that he met his wife, Mary Walsh Green, whom he married on December 28, 1963.

He served on active duty in the Navy from 1963 to 1965, stationed in San Diego, California, with six months at sea, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Second Lieutenant. After leaving the Navy, he moved back to Beaumont where he embarked on a distinguished career as a financial consultant and investment manager, living and working in both Beaumont and Houston throughout his entire career. A Certified Financial Planner, Michael was currently residing in Houston, where he was Vice President at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney with offices in Houston and Beaumont.

Michael was active in civic and community affairs.  He was treasurer for the Beaumont Symphony, and was especially supportive of Catholic education and sports. He was on the Monsignor Kelly High School Board for several years, and was also active in the Kelly Booster Club.  In Houston, he was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, and supported the St. Vincent de Paul School.

He loved his family, delighted in his grandchildren, and was dedicated to his wife and their three children, supporting them in all things. He also generously provided incalculable assistance to his parents, siblings, and many friends.

An athlete and sportsman who cherished nature and the outdoors, especially ocean-related activities, Michael loved reading, music, dogs (and they loved him), casinos, and fast convertibles. He was blessed with a wickedly unique sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Walsh Green; by their three children, Thomas Michael Green and his wife Karen David-Green of Houston, Dr. Marjorie Catherine Green of Houston, John Edward Green and his wife, Katherine Scaglia Green of Kansas City, Kansas; by his four grandchildren, John Michael Green, III and Thomas Wyatt Green of Houston, and Mary Katherine Green and Gage Wallace Green of Kansas City. He is also survived by his mother, Dorothy Fontenot Green of Beaumont; his three siblings, Patricia Green Thorp of Beaumont, Sarah Elizabeth Green Haddad and her husband, Ricardo Haddad of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and David Hugh Green and his wife, Kathy Sylvester Green of Ocean View, Delaware; by his four sisters-in-law, Kathleen Walsh Harty and her husband John Harty of Laguna Beach, California, Colleen Walsh Warin and her husband Ed Warin  of Omaha, Nebraska, Melanie Walsh Flannery and her husband Robert Flannery of Chicago, Illinois, and Maureen Walsh of Sun Valley, Idaho; and his numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass celebrating his life will be held at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica on Wednesday, April 27, at 2:00 p.m., followed by the committal at Magnolia Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the University of Notre Dame will be appreciated. Donations may be sent to: The University of Notre Dame, 1100 Grace Hall,Notre Dame, IN 46556 Attn: Carol Hennion.
