Georgia Dale McIntosh Martin
March 23, 1923 - October 25, 2010
Georgia Dale McIntosh Martin, 87, of Beaumont, died Monday, October 25, 2010, at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont.
Known as Georgia, and Georgia Dale, to many of her long time Beaumont friends, she was more than just a resident. Georgia was a person who "gave back" whenever and wherever she could.
An accomplished business woman prior to her retirement at 72, Georgia didn't let retirement slow her down much. She was involved in her community and took her enjoyment of people with her while doing her volunteer work.
Georgia recognized that she could make a difference and started the first bridge group at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church which is still very lively today. She was an active member of St. Hilda's Guild working with the Chili supper and Bazaar. Georgia was accomplished at knitting and created scarves for the homeless and prayer shawls for those of St. Mark's who were ill. She worked as a volunteer at the church Gift Shop and at the Treasure House. In her spare time, she delivered Meals on Wheels each week to those in need.
Perhaps her greatest accomplishment, known mainly to close friends and family, was not "feeling sorry for herself" in the years when her health began to become a concern. She continued to help others and tried to set an example to many who needed a helping hand. She left her mark on Beaumont and it is one that can be felt rather than seen – once you know her, you never seem to forget her sense of humor, sweet smile, and words of encouragement to others.
She is survived by her son, Gordon Martin and his wife Phyllis; daughters, Dale Laughlin and her husband Jim and Marilyn Listander and her husband Edward; grandchildren, Katherine Davis and her husband Scott, Elizabeth Nelson, Parker Hiscox, Robert Laughlin, and Collin Martin; great-grandchild, Grace Katherine; and sister, Lillian McConnico of Raleigh, North Carolina.
Her funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 29, 2010, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 680 Calder, Beaumont, with a reception immediately following in the Cloister room. A graveside service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday afternoon at Magnolia Cemetery, 2291 Pine Street, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin, Beaumont.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 680 Calder, Beaumont, Texas 77701.
The family would like to express a heartfelt thanks to the aids and nurses who took care of Georgia Martin at Jefferson Nursing and Rehabilitation.
