Helen Jean Fort Lewis
August 6, 1926 - October 13, 2016
Our
beloved Helen, Mom, Mama, Memommy, Memom, and Monnie went to be with the Lord
on Thursday morning at age 90 after a lifelong devotion to God and her family. She
will be dearly missed by her large family and many friends.
Helen
is remembered by her loving husband of seventy years, Charles N. Lewis, who has
been holding her hand since high school until her bedside this week. Her
children, Susan Binks and husband, Jackie; Chuck Lewis and wife, Laurie; and
Karen Parsley and husband, James, take comfort in memories of her friendship,
family celebrations, and camping trips. Memommy was a blessing to her six
grandchildren: Emily Cantrell and husband, Nick; Amy Sanderson and husband,
Perry; Adam Lewis; Carly Lewis; Gracie Lewis; and Kevin Parsley. They will miss
her attendance at their life events, her bright smile, and her home cooking.
Her three great-grandchildren, Will Cantrell, Perry Sanderson IV, and Lily
Cantrell have enjoyed being held and loved on by Memommy. Aunt Helen was also dearly
loved by many nieces and nephews.
We
will all miss her constant presence and especially her cooking. Helen was famed
for her mayhaw jelly, gumbo, chocolate pies, chicken and dumplings, fudge,
angel biscuits, teacakes, pecan pies, and chocolate peanut butter oatmeal
cookies. It’s surely been a feast in Heaven since she arrived. She believed
that life was measured in friends instead of years, and in that regard, she was
also abundantly blessed. She cherished her many friendships, especially those
with her lifelong Sewing Club friends. Helen lived a life of love and we aspire
to follow her example.
Helen
was born on August 6, 1926, to Mary Jewel Woods Fort and William Herman Fort,
in Wiergate, Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; two
brothers; and her daughter, Patrice Lewis.
A
gathering of Helen’s family and friends will begin at 12:00 p.m., with her
funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, October 16, 2016, at
Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A graveside service will be
Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Jasper City Cemetery, 1299 North Main Street, Jasper.
Helen
was a devoted member of Forest Park United Methodist Church, 225 South Major
Drive, Beaumont, Texas 77707. Donations to the church in her memory are
welcomed.
“Well
done my good and faithful servant.”
