Dr. Achyutananda Roy
passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston on the evening of March 7, 2016,
after suffering a stroke. Achyutananda, born on September 25, 1938, in
Khiraty, Mednipur, India, was the oldest son of Pramila and Khudiram Roy.
Achyut attended
Ramjibanpur Babulal Institute for high school before receiving his
inter-science and medical degrees from the University of Calcutta in
India. His surgical training was undertaken in the United Kingdom, where
he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1967. He came to
the United States in 1969 as a Fellow in Surgery at Wayne State University in
Detroit before completing his surgical residence program at St. Clare Hospital
in New York City in 1973. In 1974 he became a Diplomate of the American
Board of Surgery, and three years later in 1977, he became a fellow
of the American College of Surgeons. From 1977 to 1994, he practiced
general surgery in Winnfield, Louisiana; Orange, Texas; and Beaumont,
Texas.
He was a loving
husband, father, and grandfather who sought to instill his family and loved
ones with the values of honesty, integrity, discipline, hard work, and a deep
reverence for their Indian cultural roots, for Vedic philosophy, and for the
Hindu religion. Throughout his life, he strove to better himself through
study and reflection and retained a lifelong interest in spiritual questions
and principles by which to guide his life, leading him to membership in several
organizations including the Chinmaya Mission of Beaumont, The Houston Durgabari
Society, and the Vedanta Society. He traveled extensively, often seeking
picturesque settings of natural beauty and places of great historical and
cultural significance around the world. He was also an avid gardener,
photographer, swimmer, and tennis player.
He is survived by his
wife of forty-six years, Banalata; his sons, Amit, Samit, and Sanjit; his
brother, Brahmananda; his sisters, Chhabi, Nanda, Puspa, and Maya; his
granddaughter, Henley; and several other nieces, nephews, and family members.
A funeral service for Dr. Roy will
be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2016, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major
Drive, Beaumont, with a committal to follow at Broussard’s Crematorium.
