Dr. Joseph Harmon Block, Jr.
December 5, 1937 - February 23, 2015
Joseph H. Block, Jr., M.D., 77, of Houston, passed away at
his home Monday, February 23, 2015. He was born on December 5, 1937, in Port
Neches, to Vivian Alice Collier Block and Joseph H. Block, Sr.
Joseph graduated from Port Neches High School and Lamar
University before completing medical school at UT Medical Branch, Galveston. He
then completed an internship at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana,
followed by a medical residency at OU University Hospital, Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma.
He proudly served his country as a physician, with the rank
of Captain, in the United States Air Force while stationed in Vietnam and the
Philippines from 1967 to 1969. After his service to his country, Joe practiced
medicine as an ophthalmologist in the Heights area of Houston for nearly 30
years.
A music lover, Joe played percussion in Lamar University's
marching band and the Beaumont Symphony.
He is survived by his wife of nearly twenty years, Marsha
Block of Houston; twin sons; Derek Block and his wife, Jenn, of Frisco and
Dietrich Block of Lake Dallas; niece, Melissa Beck of Dana Point, California;
and grandchildren, Zoe, Holden, Jackson, Tristan, and Kaylin.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Vivian Collier
Block and Joseph H. Block, Sr.; and sister, Melanie Block Williams.
A gathering of Dr. Block's family and friends will be at
11:00 a.m., with his funeral service at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 28, 2015,
at Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland. Interment will follow at Oak
Bluff Memorial Park, Port Neches.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in
Dr. Block’s memory to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 815 Market Avenue
Drive, Galveston, Texas 77550.
