Vivian Louise Carey
August 5, 1918 - November 24, 2014
Vivian Louise Carey went to her spiritual home on November
24, 2014. She was born August 5, 1918,
in Graford. Louise was the youngest of six children, born to William and Nellie
Williams Hollaway. She married on April
16, 1937, and had sixty-four years with the love of her life, Tom F. Carey.
During World War II, while her husband was overseas, Louise
worked as an air mail dispatcher in the post office on the Camp Wolter’s Army base
in Mineral Wells. Sometimes, however, with other postal
employees, she had to open packages to inspect for contraband, which she
disliked, because it was such an invasion of privacy.
After the war, she was happy to return to the job that she
loved best, a homemaker, and she excelled at it. She was an innovative cook who could turn
leftovers into something special or improve upon a dish that she had eaten at a
restaurant. No one ever left her house
hungry. A skilled seamstress, she made
most of her and her daughter’s clothes and altered shirts and pants for her
husband. She also liked to do sequin crafts, especially calendars, which she
gave to family and friends.
Most of her time was spent seeing to the needs of her
family, making life easier or better for them.
Her husband and daughter came first.
She came last. Her main outside
activity was her participation in the work and fellowship of the Church of
Christ. In later life, Louise, still very clear-minded, resented the
natural infirmities of old age that
prevented her from doing things for her family and for keeping her from being
more active in the church
God blessed Louise with a special gift: empathy. Her caring nature seemed to draw people to
her. Family members, friends, and
sometimes even strangers told her their troubles. She gave them her full
attention and really listened! She
seldom gave advice. She just listened.
Sometimes she cried or laughed with them, or just gave a hug, or squeezed their
hand. She cared for people and never
divulged a confidence. She always had a
list of people to pray for posted on the front of her Bible which she read
everyday. She will be greatly missed.
Louise is survived by her daughter, Berylyn Bazzoon and her husband,
Jim, of Santa Fe, Texas; grandson, Thomas James “T.J.” Bazzoon of San Antonios;
great-grandson, Gerald Alexander “Jerry” Bazzoon of Pearland; niece, Wilse Lee
Davis of Alexandria, Louisiana; other nieces and nephews; and special cat
companion, “Missy.”
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, and
siblings.
A gathering of Mrs. Carey’s family and friends will begin at
10:00 a.m., with her funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December
1, 2014, at Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Drive, Winnie. Interment will
follow at Fairview Cemetery, Winnie.
