Seawillow "Susie" Urie
December 8, 1916 - October 22, 2014
Seawillow Edwards Urie,
affectionately known to her friends and family as Susie, died early Wednesday
morning October 22, 2014, at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth. She was 97 years
old.
Susie was the daughter of James
Shastid Edwards and Anna Elizabeth Edwards, a pioneer Beaumont family. She was preceded in death by her parents;
husband, Jack Urie; brother, Lum Caswell Edwards, Sr.; sister, Elizabeth
Edwards Shaw; sisters-in-law, Lillian Martin Edwards and Eva Johnson; and
nephew, James Edwards Shaw.
After attending local schools,
Susie graduated from Beaumont High School. She matriculated at The University
of Texas at Austin where she enjoyed campus life as a member of Zeta Tau Alpha
Sorority. It was in Austin that Susie met the love of her life,
Jack Urie.
Married at the tender age of 18,
Susie and her husband Jack led a happy and active life. Jack was an avid sportsman and Susie shared
in his favorite activities mastering golf, hunting, and fishing. She was a devoted and loving wife. She and Jack lived most of their lives
happily in Port Arthur, Texas, until later in life when they moved to Beaumont
when Jack became ill.
After Jack’s death in 1995, Susie
found comfort and pleasure in the company of her friends and family. Celebrating
holidays and birthdays were special times for her. At family gatherings Susie
regaled all with colorful stories of early Beaumont and Edwards family
traditions she likened to “Life With Father”.
Susie also enjoyed recalling the wonderful cruise she and Jack took in Hawaii with Lil and Lum,
her brother and sister-in-law.
Tina, her beloved Boston Terrier,
brought great joy and companionship to Susie.
Constantly at her side, Tina brightened Susie’s life.
Susie is survived by nephews, Lum
C. Edwards, Jr. and his wife, Mary Ann; Martin Edwards and his wife, Melissa;
and Ned Johnson. She is also survived by
many beloved great-nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend
deepest gratitude to Susie’s loyal and devoted care givers Candy Fleming, Jo
Helen Harmon, Raquel Robinette, Andrea Berry, and Catrina Harmon who lovingly
tended to Susie’s every need.
Susie was alert and happy until
the end. She was a special person whose upbeat personality, kindness and
positive attitude were an inspiration to all who were blessed to know her. Susie’s legacy will live on in the hearts and
minds of her loved ones.
