Mary Bernadine Rogers Porter, also known as “Judy” by many friends and relatives, and as “Aunt Dean” by nieces and nephews and as “Muna” by 9 great grandchildren passed away December 14, 2004.

Bernadine was a lady who loved God, her church and her devoted family. For 70 years, she was a faithful member for Calvary Baptist Church.

Bernadine was born in Cass County, Texas, July 2nd, 1913, into a farming family and was well acquainted with hard work and a meager lifestyle.

She married her childhood sweetheart in 1935 and shortly after moved to Beaumont when her late husband J.D. “Bully” Porter got a job with the Magnolia Refinery. They set up housekeeping on Fulton Street where they raised their two daughters, Barbara and Doris.

She worked as a cafeteria manager for the Beaumont Schools until her retirement in 1975. She was a person who loved to work and most of all loved to cook. Her chicken and dumplings and pecan pies brought raves from all who were fortunate enough to partake. Many were aware of her kindness and generosity, always ready to help or contribute to any in need.

Her warm smile and sense of humor made her a comforting companion. Her 91 years are ended but the legacy of her loving way will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughters Barbara Smalley and her husband Johnny, and Doris Schug and her husband Lew, grandchildren, Dane Smalley and his wife Ronna with their daughters Dana and Joanna; Rodney Smalley and his wife Chantal with their sons Matthew and Johnathan; Dee Dee Maraist and her husband Todd with their children Elise, Bailey, Johnie, Cadee and Evan; Don Schug; Robert Schug; and John Schug and his wife Sue; and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 18, 2004 at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont followed by burial at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. A gathering of family and friends will be Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering c/o Calvary Baptist Church, 3650 Dowlen Road, Beaumont, Texas 77706.

Aunt Dean was a favorite of mine. She was so funny and we had a good time when we went on the trip to Linden. I'll miss her.

Aunt Dean held a very special place in my heart. Her life was an example as to how a Christian is to live. I shall truly miss her (and those chicken and dumplings) but know she is celebrating the birthday of the Christ Child in His very presence. My thoughts, prayers and sympathy to Barbara Jane, Doris Ellen and family.
