Mildred Strube, 90, was called to be with her Lord on Saturday, March 23, 2013, in Lumberton. Mildred was born on November 12, 1922, in Rule, Texas, to Frances and William Hills. Mildred grew up in Rule, a small West Texas town, where her father owned a hardware store. She was an outgoing and popular girl in school and spent summers at Camp Waldemar in the Texas Hill Country. After the death of her father, the family; mother, Frances, Mildred, and sister, Nancy moved to Denton where Mildred attended Texas Women’s University and North Texas State University, earning a degree in Home Economics.

In 1949 Mildred got a teaching job in Port Neches, where friends introduced her to Earl Strube, a chemist at Neches Butane. Mildred and Earl were married in 1951 and Mildred quit teaching to raise their three children; Carol, Sharla, and Kent. In 1968 Mildred went back to teaching Home Economics at Port Neches Groves High School where she taught through the mid-1970’s. She also taught at Lamar Tech. After retirement, Mildred and Earl moved to Wildwood and later to Lumberton.

Mildred enjoyed an active social life. She and Earl traveled extensively, both in the United States and abroad, including Europe, Israel, and Egypt. She also belonged to a number of bridge clubs over the years and was a participant inthe Red Hat Society.

Survivors include her children, Carol Wyatt of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Sharla Strube and her husband, Vic Hinterlang, of Austin; Kent Strube and his wife, LiLi, of Union City, California; Gary Strube and his wife, Barbara, of Colmesneil; and Kenneth Strube of Houston; grandchildren, Justin Strube, Kelli Brug, Gary Dean Strube, Jimmy Strube, and Jina and Layla Strube; great-grandchildren, Shane Brug, Garret Strube, Michael Strube, and Logan Strube; sister, Nancy Tarbox and her husband, E.J. Tarbox and their children, Monte Tarbox, Janis Tarbox Fisher, Jane Auhl, and Jonathan Tarbox; all of Highlands, North Carolina; and daughter-in-law, Betty Strube. She is preceded in death by her parents; and husband of sixty-two years, Earl Strube.

I just learned of the passing of Mrs. Strube. She was a delightful teacher(Class of '72), and her class was a joy. My sympathy to all of her loved ones to heal from this loss, and emerge from it with only the beautiful memories she left to everyone she met.

Kent and Family: My mother informed me of your mom's passing. We always think that people like your mom will live forever. I'll always remember her as one of the neighborhood moms who treated all the kids as one of her own. Your mom and dad were great people whose values were to be respected and cherished. My family thinks of you and your family, often. Contact me at the e-mail listed if you get a chance. Again, many have lost by your moms passing. Will remember her in my prayers.

Dear Sharla,

I am moved and extend my deepest sympathy to you at the passing of yor mom, and recently, your dad. Inside of me are fond memories of you and your family. May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, keep your heart and your mind in the Anointed One, Jesus. And whatever things are good, and pure, and perfect, and holy, and of a good report, noble, and praiseworthy, think on these things. You have a precious family and a precious heritage and legacy. My thoughts and my prayers are with you all in this season. You are so blessed.
