John McGill “Mac” Cheesman, 85, of Beaumont, passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2012, after a brief illness. A native and lifelong resident of Beaumont, he was born on August 6, 1927, to Ione McGill and Guy W. Cheesman.

Mac graduated from Beaumont High School in 1943. He went on to graduate from The University of Texas, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, and was a distinguished member of the Phi Kappa Psi Bowling Team. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was stationed in San Diego, California.

After graduating, he embarked on a forty-one year career as a stock broker/financial advisor. Mac enjoyed one of the most outstanding reputations one could ever achieve in the business. In fact, he was known as “Mr. Investment” to the entire community of Beaumont for many years. He was a devoted husband and a loving father. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, tennis, gardening, and more than anything he cherished his time with family and friends. He also was passionate about his family dogs. There were too many to name over the years, however “Pal” was his main dog companion. Mac was a man who never met a stranger. He was loved by all.

He was a longtime member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church where he served on the session as a Deacon, and most recently on the Foundation Board of Directors. Mac also taught Sunday school for many years. He was active in West End Little League as a coach and eventually serving as president. He was a member of the Rotary Club and the Beaumont Country Club.

Mac is survived by his wife, Ruth Esser Cheesman; children, Polly Frazier and her husband, William, of Dallas; John McGill Cheesman, Jr. and his wife, Laura, of Houston; Melinda Condos and her husband, Alex, of San Antonio; and Dr. Samuel F. Bean; grandchildren, Billy, Scott, and David Frazier, Meredith, Allyson, and John Cheesman, Matthew Bean, Fletcher and George Mixon, and Elliot and Alexa Condos; brother, Guy Walden Cheesman

He is preceded in death by the mother of his children and first wife, Marji Hanna Cheesman; daughter, Camille Cheesman Bean; and second wife, Eloise Dentler Cheesman.

A gathering of Mr. Cheesman’s family and friends will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Sunday, October 14, 2012, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Parlor, 1350 North 23rd Street, Beaumont. His memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 15, 2012, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A family committal was held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Beaumont.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of Southeast Texas, P.O. Box 1629, Beaumont, Texas 77704, or to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 1350 North 23rd Street, Beaumont, Texas 77706.

My most sincere condolences to the Cheesman family!

Mr. Cheesman was the father of one of my best friends in High School – Gill. Spending a lot of great times with Gill, I remember the Cheesman’s home as one of those that I and other close friends would hang around and Mr. and Mrs. Cheesman always made me feel like a part of their family. It almost became a tradition to spend a little time with the Cheesman’s on Christmas Eve, before spending time with my own. I remember Mr. Cheesman as one of my Sunday school teachers, his favorite dog “Pal”, the time he let me and John Ohmstede travel with their family to Hawaii one summer and when Mr. Cheesman put in a good word for me with the builder/developer of Woodpark so I could get a summer time and after school job.

“Mac” Cheesman raised a great family and my thoughts and prayers are now with them during this difficult time.

Mac was a wonderful man who gave me my first job doing some computer work in his office. He was a role model and he was a mentor to me. I learned about the stock and bond markets. It was an exciting time in the markets back in the eighties, which led me to become a financial advisor, just like him. You will be missed by everyone you touched with your kindness and I will pray for your family. I will see you again one day in Heaven my friend.
Sincerely,
Thomas Haisten
