Gerald “Pink” Heckaman, 82, of Hamshire, died Thursday, October 4, 2012, at The Arboretum of Winnie. He was born on September 13, 1929, in Disko, Indiana to Goldie Phend Heckaman and Schuyler Heckaman.

In the 1930’s, Pink and his family moved to Texas to become rice farmers. They returned to Indiana in 1940, where he graduated from high school in Deedsville, Indiana. Immediately after his graduation he boarded a train and returned to Texas to start farming and become a longtime resident of Hamshire. Pink was a local rice farmer for over fifty years and was honored to be named the Pioneer Farmer of the Year by the Texas Rice Festival in 2001. It is only fitting that his last harvest came during the Texas Rice Festival of 2012.

Verna and family, I'm just reading of Pinky's passing. Please accept my sincere condolences. He was a fine man! I have missed the residents at the Arb. Sadly, not working there I have lost contact with them and their families. He always made me laugh. And what a beautiful smile he had! I'm truly sorry for your loss. You and your family will be in my prayers.

Mr Heckaman was a Proverbs 17:27 man...
He who has knowledge spares his words,
And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.

Through the years living by him, I witnessed a man of tremendous common sense and knowledge concerning ANY need regarding family, home and living. From sowing seed to using a hammer and nails and tools for machinery and automobiles. Always a postive word and encouragement. Postive attitude towards even the diriest of jobs that needed to be done. No complaints or sour words. All that should be most important to any man was to him, and he gave his best.
He walked tall, and with few words, carried a big stick called respect....
