Dr. Hugh O. McFarland, Jr., known as H.O. to his friends, passed away peacefully at his home in Nederland on November 22, 2011.

He was born in Port Arthur, Texas to Hugh and Blanche McFarland on March 18, 1927. H.O. joined the United States Air Force during the latter part of World War II and was training as a pilot when the war ended, joining the ranks of disappointed young pilots-in-training who were released as a result of the end of hostilities. After marrying Lora Faye Fox, H.O. went to Baylor School of Dentistry in Dallas and earned his D.D.S. degree. Returning to Jefferson County, he set up a successful private practice in Nederland and became a respected local dentist in the community.

H.O. was a fifty year Master Mason and a member of Nederland Lodge #3168, A.F. & A.M. In his younger days, H.O. was an avid hunter and fisherman, and spent many happy hours at the family cabin in Crystal Beach. He was a pleasant, easygoing man with many friends and a great sense of humor, and he will be missed.

H.O. leaves behind his son, Michael McFarland and his wife, Kathleen of Port Neches; daughter, Mary McFarland of Beaumont, five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Lora Faye McFarland. A gathering of his family and friends will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, November 27, 2011, at Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland.

My much belated regrets to Mike and Miss Mary on the passing of my old fishing and hunting buddy. I spoke with him by phone a few years back, and was sad tto hear what had happened to Lora Fay so many years ago. She and my former wife had been great friends for the many years I practiced in West Orange.

We laughed for years about how the two of them freaked out friends with their pet snake.

I miss and loved them both.

Sincerest sympathies to the Family of H.O. McFarland Jr. I never met this man, however, I did have the honor of meeting his father, my great uncle, Hugh Oscar McFarland, in the early 1970's.
Please accept my condolences on behalf of my entire McFarland family.
