Opal Marie Grammer Rhodes, 91, a native and lifelong resident of Stowell, died on November 12, 2011, at the Arboretum of Winnie. She was born on October 21, 1920, the youngest child of Lafayette Rogers Grammer and Lillie Viola Carr Grammer.

Opal graduated from East Chambers High School Class of 1940, and was awarded the citizenship award. She was a chartered member of the First United Methodist Church of Winnie-Stowell. On May 5, 1949, she married the love of her life, Walter Rhodes. Opal was a very devoted clerk at the Winnie Pharmacy for twenty-five years. She was a great seamstress, making most of the clothes she wore. Opal loved her family very much and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need.

Left to cherish her memory, her only child, Sandra McLaurin-Reagan and her husband, Michael; grandsons, Doyl Kent McLaurin, Jr. and his wife, Donya and Cody Carl McLaurin; granddaughter, Velma Marie Rutherford and her husband, Drew; Amy Kay McLaurin-Jones, Amy Nicole Nance McLaurin and Quita Reed and her husband, Adam; great-grandsons, Mitchell Tully, Blake McLaurin, Kaleb McLaurin, Kaleb Jones and Alexander Reed; great-granddaughters, Savannah McLaurin and Peyton McLaurin; and a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandsons, Bon Bernard Manuel, II and Kent Anthony McLaurin; sisters, Clara Grammer and Gertrude Bond; brothers, Tootie, William, Earl, Dow and Jack Grammer; son-in-law, Doyle Kent McLaurin.

A golden heart has stopped and left a great legacy here on earth.

Her funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 15, 2011, at First United Methodist Church, 1706 State Highway 124, with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery, under the direction of Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Street, in Winnie.
