Mickey F. Heard, 62, of Port Neches, entered eternal life on June 14, 2010.

Born on the 7th of September, 1947 to the late Edna Frances Heard and Cecil C. Heard, Mickey grew up in Beaumont, Texas. Graduating from South Park High School in 1966, he went on to attend the local Lamar State College of Technology, earning his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 1970. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and received the Overseas Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal and Expert M16 Rifle Badge.

Mickey worked for Jefferson County Child Welfare, beginning in July 1972 as a Child Protective Services Worker, next as a Foster Children’s Worker, and lastly as a Supervisor of Ongoing Child Protective Services until April 1978. He then made a career change to work for Mobil Oil Refinery (which later became Exxon-Mobil), beginning in the labor gang pool in April 1978, advancing to Assistant Operator-Process in October 1978, and lastly serving as Operator A, CHDII/Sulphur Plant, until he retired in December 2003 after a 25 year career. Mickey was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who would always go the extra mile to help out his family. He had a gift for remembering facts and history and was often called upon to answer such questions. The last six years of his life, he developed a love of deer hunting, thanks to his friend Vance Swarthout, and looked forward to it each year. Considered an avid reader, he particularly loved action-adventure novels and history books, and read every book he could find from the Revolutionary War to the War in Iraq.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Patsy Erwin Heard, his daughter, Stacy Mancuso and husband Joseph, and granddaughter Mikayla Patricia Williams. He is also survived by a sister, Freda Reeves and husband Dana of LaVernia, Texas, niece Michelle Moore and husband Chris of Rogers, Arkansas, great nephew, Caleb Moore and great niece, Jessica Moore.

He was preceded in death by his mother Edna Frances Heard Smith in January 2008 and his father Cecil C. Heard in September 1981.

My dear Patsy

I will remember Mickey with so much fondness...he was such a gentle, loving man. I am so very sorry you were burdened with this horrible disease that has taken so many of my family and friends. I just wish I'd had more years to spend nearer you and Mickey and had learned to know Stacy. My heart and prayers are with you.
With much love,
Judy
