James Harvey Davis, 90, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Pine Arbor Health Care Center in Silsbee, Texas. He was born September 16, 1919, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, the son of the late Henry Leroy and Amanda Faye (Ardis) Davis.

Harvey, as he preferred to be called, graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1937, and then attended East Texas State Teachers College. He worked in the family cleaning and pressing business, his uncle’s bakery, and Rockwell International until 1941, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During World War II, he served as an Aviation Aerographer’s Mate on the aircraft carrier, USS Bunker Hill, and saw action during the Pacific Campaign. After the war, he received his Bachelors degree from Sam Houston State Teachers College and his Masters degree from East Texas State Teachers College. He worked as a biology teacher in Sulphur Springs, Marshall, and Dallas Independent School Districts for a total of 32 years.

Harvey had a passion for fishing his entire life. He also loved to travel and as an avid reader, was knowledgeable on a wide range of subjects. He also wrote several poems, many of which were published in local newspapers, and a book of his poems is currently in work. He was a kind and caring man who loved the boys he chose to raise and being “Grandpa Harvey”. He was a long-time member of the Masonic Lodge, and a member of the First Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church of Mesquite.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sybil Lou Davis; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Margarett McAfee of Parrish, Florida; and son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Teri Thornton of Kountze, Texas; four grandchildren, Cory McAfee of Garland, T.J. To the Family of Mr. Harvey Davis,

I wanted you to know what a special man Mr. Davis always was to me.

I met Mr. Davis when I walked into his Honors biology class in 1969 at W.W. Samuell H.S. Mr. Davis was a very tough teacher, but a very caring and kind soul. I remember so clearly how helpful he would be and how he'd go to the ends of the earth to help a student if he or she needed help.

After I graduated, I saw him here and there, at the grocery store, and then, eventually, lost touch.

Some decades ago, I joined First Presbyterian of Mesquite -- and, after the service where I affirmed my faith, Mr. Davis approached me and reminded me he had been my Honors biology teacher. I recognized him instantly!

By this point in my life, I didn't feel odd about hugging him and I did just that. He gave me a warm hug in return.

The next week, he approached me with the gift of a daffodil he'd grown in his garden.

I love flowers, so I truly enjoyed the flowers he and Mrs. Davis planted and tended at the church. They were always far beyond beautiful.

We talked often, before and after church services, until I became too ill to attend. He and Mrs. Davis were always very kind and they often wrote me cards and letters to cheer me up.

I wrote back, and tried to keep up after they moved south, but eventually lost touch, I'm sorry to say. However, they were never far from my mind and my heart. They have been in my prayers for years and years.

I am very sorry for your loss, because Mr. Davis was a man of sterling character, and he made a huge difference in a lot of kids' lives -- mine being one of them. I only specifically remember two teachers from that period in my life, and Mr. Davis was one of them.

Please know that he will always be alive in my mind and heart, and while I know his loss is overwhelming, he is with God and safe in His hands. You can be assured that the flower beds of Heaven have gained a wonderful new gardener.

God could not have chosen better.

Please give my love and condolences to Mrs. Davis.

God bless you; your entire family -- and Mr. Davis -- remain in my prayers.

Sincerely,
Laura Virgil
