Bernardo Martinez, 63, of Beaumont, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009. A native of Port Arthur and lifelong resident of the Nederland area, Bernardo was an electrician with IBEW Local 409 for over thirty years.

A United States veteran, Bernardo served in Vietnam and received a Bronze Service Star, National Defense Service Medal and a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Bernardo graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur and received an associate’s degree from Lamar University.

Bernardo was family oriented and the type of man who always considered others before himself. Constantly working to help his neighbor, Bernardo spend countless hours volunteering and with his Church. From collecting and delivering gifts and food for missions to Mexico to wiring homes for Hurricane Ike victims to hitchhikers needing a lift, he never thought twice about helping anyone in need. To him, no one was a stranger and sleep was optional.

Survivors include his sons, Ben Martinez III and his wife Janie, and Victor Martinez; daughter, La Reina Arshad and her husband Sam; mother, Conception Flores Martinez; grandchildren, Brittany, Julio and Bailey; fourteen brothers and sisters; fourteen nieces and thirteen nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Reynaldo Martinez.

First off, I've always and forever loved you, grandpa. Even tho, we really weren't given much time together you're in the heart forever. I've always heard stories from my father about you're caring and kindheartedness towards other. From meeting you the few times, I knew that I must have gotten my crazy side from you and my big heart. I see alot of you in me and I hope to pass that to friends and family. I love you, grandpa. You'll be with me always!

I have lost the dearest friend I have had in a long time. I will miss your friendship, our long phone conversations and time spent with you while in California. You enjoyed so many things I do and we were so much alike. I find myself wanting to call you just to tell you how I am hurting but that is impossible. I am praying for your family members as I know God is the only one who can give us all comfort during this time of loss. As you always use to sign off "A Friend Forever" Love Linda

Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years. Revelation 20:6 NIV
