Skip Myers, 74 years old, departed this adventure and went on to the next on July 13 2009, due to complications related to his second stroke. Ever the sense of humor in the room, he kept his family smiling through all that life offered up, including his own illness.
He was born November 1, 1934, to Richard Everett Myers, Sr. and Mary Louise Beadle Myers, and was raised on Bolivar Peninsula. He graduated in 1951 from Ball High School in Galveston, then attended Lamar University in Beaumont, where he studied mechanical and diesel engineering before he was called to duty in the Army for two years. He settled in Beaumont after coming back from Europe, performing his duties with the Army Reserves for another two years and running Circle Auto Parts and Myers Wrecking Yard with his father, where he made countless faithful friends. He later worked for and then retired from Sandoz/BASF in 1994. He was remarkably gifted with the ability to diagnose and repair any mechanical device, large or small.
He was rarely rattled by any puzzle life set before him, and was calmly curious to know how things would turn out. He thought people were crazy and highly amusing, and he had a special understanding of animals and nature. His bowleggedness was legendary, acquired from all those years of horse-back riding with his lifelong friend Andrew Johnson. He never got in a hurry about anything, ever, except his meals. That was because “the Army gave us two minutes for meals, so they trained me good.”
His parents preceded him in death. His surviving family members include his wife of forty-seven years, Roy Lynn Etie Myers; his children, Brenda Myers, Lisa Myers, and Everett Myers and his wife Tonya; his grandchildren, Shane, Hannah, Chase, Casey and Kender; and numerous cousins and much-loved in-laws across the country. His honorary family members include the Johnson and Bouse families on Bolivar Peninsula.
The Myers family is eternally grateful for and humbled by the outpouring of love and support during Skip’s illness, and wishes to thank every single person who took the time to share their stories, their love and their prayers. Special appreciation goes to the gentle staff of Memorial Hermann Baptist Beaumont Hospital and Harbor Hospice House of Beaumont, and to Reverend Ed Rawls, who provided the shelter of his grace at a moment’s notice and with unsurpassed kindness.
Skip will be cremated, as he wished. A memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 16, 2009, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Broussard’s.
Donations in Skip’s memory may be made to Humane Society of Southeast Texas, P.O. Box 1629, Beaumont, Texas 77704.
