Margaret H. Johnston, 78, of Beaumont, died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Harbor Hospice in Beaumont.

A native and lifelong resident of Beaumont, she was born April 22, 1931 to Florence and Milton Hayes. Margaret graduated from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and a Minor in Chemistry.

For over forty years she was a Registered Medical Technologist at the hospital now known as Memorial Hermann Baptist Beaumont Hospital. During her career there, Margaret was also the educational coordinator and teacher of the Medical Technologist School with the hospital.

She was involved in a number of organizations, especially with American Society of Clinical Pathologists where she was active at both the state and national levels, and American Association of Clinical Chemists.

Margaret was a lady who enjoyed volunteering. She was quite active in the American Red Cross and would travel the country assisting in disaster relief. She was an Ombudsman with the Area Agency on Aging, as well as being active with Prisoners Visitation and Support, and Meals on Wheels. Her love for the outdoors brought her joy in assisting tour guides with children at Shangri La and Anahuac Refuge.

A very active lady, Margaret was an accomplished pianist and organist and had many hobbies of which she especially enjoyed swimming and bike riding.

Survivors include her husband of fifty-six years, Frank Johnston of Beaumont; daughter, Helen Huebel and her husband James of Groves; and granddaughter, Lauren Huebel of Groves.

Her parents, Florence and Milton Hayes preceded her in death.

Her funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 12, 2009, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. I wanted to send my prayers and thoughts for the loss of our darling Margaret. Margaret was truly an inspiration and hero to me as she taught me to be a Medical Technologist. Her intelligence and integrity could only be matched by her kindness (and oh, yes...those fabulous brownies!!!). She always lit up when she spoke about her family.
What a blessing she was to everyone who knew her. I feel so fortunate to have known her and humbled at how she molded an important part of my life.
Blessings to you all,
Lily Feagin

Frank, Helen, Jim, and Lauren-
I would like you to know how much Margaret has meant to me through the years. She was a wonderful, kind, hardworking, and generous lady whom we will all miss terribly. She left an indelible mark on this world. I never knew where all that energy and inner strength came from. Sort of like Helen said at the funeral--her spirit was just too big for her little body. My prayers are with you all as you go forward without this wonderful lady.
God Bless You.
