Veronica Brown passed peacefully on May 26th, 2009 of a heart attack. Veronica was born on March 5th, 1921 in Karlsbad, Sudeten Germany to Josef and Maria Stark. She met Carl Karle, a GI and native of Buffalo, New York, after the war. Veronica was one of the first war brides to immigrate to the United States in 1946.

Carl and Veronica were married in Buffalo, New York, where both of their daughters, Susan and Judy were born. They took in Veronica’s nephew, thirteen year old Werner, in 1951. Conditions in Germany were so bad at that time that Werner’s parents thought that Germany would never recover. Both Veronica and Carl made a big difference in Werner’s life. Carl’s work took the family from Buffalo to Kansas City, Missouri, later to New Orleans, Louisiana, and finally to Littleton, Colorado.

Their marriage ended after twenty years. Veronica met Jim Brown in Denver in 1977. They were married on July 7, 1978 in Vail, Colorado. They made their Home in Beaumont, Texas, where Jim was employed as an Instrumentation Engineer. During their thirty years of marriage, they delighted in visiting the U.K. and other countries in Europe including the Czech Republic and Veronica’s hometown of Karlovy Vary (formerly Karlsbad) in that country. They also traveled to Alaska, New Zealand and many other parts of the United States. One of her favorite trips was to see the Rose Bowl parade in Pasadena, California.

Veronica was known for taking hundreds of photos on those trips and would have the picture albums perfectly organized almost as soon as they returned. These photos told a great story of their travels. No matter where she lived, Veronica always had a beautiful garden. She had a skill of picking just the right types of flowers and bushes to bring out their best in the growing season. Their house in Beaumont was always easy to find because of the colorful wooden flower cutouts that Jim fabricated and fastened on the outside of their fence. With the bird houses and other items that Jim had constructed, their yard was like a small oasis on Park Meadow Drive. Her daughters both feel they inherited their gardening skills from Veronica. Jim and Veronica had a happy marriage until Jim’s death in January 2009.

Her parents, her brother Gustav Stark and her sister Gertrude Stark, preceded Veronica in death. She is survived by her daughter Susan Siddall and husband Roger, her daughter Judy Rogers and husband Steve, and her nephew Werner Stark and wife Phyllis. Veronica is also survived by James Jr. and wife Nancy, Bonnie Marrs Smith and husband Adrian, Rebecca Brown, and by Robert Brown, and wife Daroma.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Broussard’s.

I first met Veronica almost 30 years to the day. I married her beautiful, vivacious daughter Susan and Veronica and her new husband Jim Brown attended the wedding. I have to say I do not remember too much about that meeting. I had other things on my mind. I do remember she was a very charming, beautiful woman.

Over the next 30 years I visited her once with Susan and once on a business trip to Houston. Since Beaumont was close, Veronica and Jim had me stay with them. Also she visited us several times both in Denver and Seattle. She really knew how to cook and her garden was beautiful and she was a very gracious hostess. Traits that were passed on to Susan. Whenever she cooked, she always cleaned all the dishes and pans--everything was cleaned when the cooking was done. This must have been a recessive gene, because this was not passed along to Susan.

What I will miss the most is that Susan misses her so very much. Goodbye MOM.

The very first time that I met Veronica I was 16years old. She had a blond hair, blue eyed beauty for a daughter that I fell in love with. Now it was time to meet the parents. Oh boy! Veronica took a very big interest in the way her daughter and my relationship was budding. Like all good moms, she went to extremes to make sure that her daughter and I were comfortable. Not only was I invited to dinner several times, there was always lots of baked goods for us to eat after school. She trusted me with driving her new car. But that is another story. I really did enjoy the time I spent around her. She always made me feel at home. Well things do not last forever. Judy and I split up and lived different lives. After 35 years Judy and I met again, and 1 year later Judy became my wife. Now I had Veronica as my mother-in-law. She never missed a birthday, or any special holidays. I felt like I could call her mom. A couple of more years went by and Judy and I were on a business trip to Dallas. We made sure that there was a layover in Beaumont. So now, at the ripe old age of 55 I met Veronica and Jim. My mother-in-law hadn't changed. She was still the perfect hostess. It was almost like the time were were apart from one another never happened. I found her as charming as I remembered her. After all who's new mother-in-law would sit down with you and watch a NASCAR race? She did it for me! She always stayed in touch with us and I will miss those phone calls we had. Veronica, it's hard to put into words what you meant to me, but you were loved. Now that you are at peace, with Jim, in God's hands, I can still see your warm loving caring smile!

Love You Mom,

Steve

As a teenaager, I remember this woman being just as beautiful as she looks in this photo. She was a "stunner" as far as my friend's moms went! I remember our junior year in high school, where 3 couples were having dinner before Homecoming. Judy's Mom made Chicken Cacciatore with candlelight, flowers and total elegance to make it a beautiful evening for all of us young couples. She was always happy and welcomed Judy's friends into her home graciously.
