Roland J. “R.J.” Hoffmann, Jr., 81, of Beaumont, died Sunday, April 5, 2009 at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth.
A native and life long resident of Beaumont, Roland attended Allen Military Academy, in Bryan, and Lamar Institute of Technology. He was also a United States Army veteran, having served with the Corps of Engineers from 1946 until 1947 as Battalion Carpenter. He retired as a lab technician for Sun Oil in 1988 after forty-two years of service.
After retirement, Roland enjoyed part time employment with Arceneaux Furniture Manufacturing Company and Carlin Manufacturing and Distribution Company, where he practiced his skills with woodworking. He also became a faithful employee of Broussard’s Mortuary, before illness caused him to resign in May of 2000.
Roland was baptized and raised in the Presbyterian Church. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, where he served as a trustee. He served on the Board of Deacons in each church he joined and took an active part in each as a member on the church’s Property Committee. He was always ready to fix and repair wherever a need appeared. Roland was truly the happiest when there was a project to be done and was always eager to do it. God blessed him with a great talent in many crafts. Roland’s love of music and singing was also his gift to the church. He was a lifelong member in the Sanctuary Choir of the Presbyterian Church, until recently resigning due to health problems. Later in life, he greatly enjoyed reading and working with stained glass.
Roland was a member of the South Park Lions Club for many years. He was active in the PTA in both South Park and Beaumont school districts, as well as Boy Scouts. Upon retirement he served as a volunteer for the Texas Energy Museum, Some Other Place, St. Elizabeth Hospital, and in many personal ways, to so many who were in need of his willingness to help as a handyman.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years, Frances Marion Hoffmann; son, Roland J. Hoffmann, III and his wife, Barbara, of San Antonio; and grandson, Christopher Roland Hoffman and his wife Patricia, of San Antonio; and many other loving nieces, nephews and family members.
His mother, Susan Holland Hoffmann; father, Roland Jules Hoffmann, Sr.; sister, Bernice Hoffmann; brother; Raymond R. Hoffmann; and son, Wayne Keith Hoffmann, preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin. A gathering of friends and family will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at the church.
