Ann Rose Batsell, lifelong resident of Beaumont died March 10, 2009 at Beaumont Health Care.
Ann always spoke lovingly and admiringly of her parents, Zelda and Herman Glober and siblings, Sara, Sam, Bess and Madeline each of whom predeceased her. Her parents, Zelda and Herman along with children, Sara, Sam and Bess arrived in Galveston, Texas after an arduous trip from Warsaw, Poland in 1906. Ann was born within a year of her parents arrival. Once in Beaumont, where other relatives lived, her father opened a butcher shop on Magnolia. The hours were long, the work hard, but the family succeeded in putting down roots and becoming part of the Beaumont community. One of Ann’s favorite memories is canoeing on the Neches River with an older cousin Herman Fleckman who also squired her to school dances.
Upon graduation from Beaumont High, Ann went to Lamar junior college, where she learned bookkeeping skills. At that time, her brother Sam was working in New York City and invited her to join him there. By the end of Ann’s second day in the big city, she had a job at Macy’s in the bookkeeping department. However, her father’s illness brought her back to Beaumont where she joined him in the family business, and began keeping the books…to the penny. She cared for her parents until their deaths. Her mother, Zelda lived with Ann and her husband Russ for twenty-five years. Ann was a natural caregiver, a careful eater, an avid exerciser, a wonderful joke teller and a phenomenal mind for numbers. In her nineties, she could rattle off a list of twenty telephone numbers by memory.
Ann took great pride in caring for her sister, Madeline at Schlesinger’s Nursing Home and was the sole volunteer of the gift shop which Ann established. Being a Pilot Club member gave her great joy. It comes as no surprise that she was a top producer of the annual pecan project. She counted the members among her family and indeed they have been incredibly helpful and supportive to her. When Ann decided the time had come to sell her house, the Pilot Club members arranged the estate sale, the move to Collier Park and the decoration of Ann’s apartment. Their efforts and unselfishness affirmed the love she felt for the organization.
Ann was a valued member of Temple Emanuel and the Sisterhood.
We would especially like to thank Lee Heidman and Rose Maxwell who have been devoted and kind beyond measure.
While we mourn Ann’s passing, let us cherish her strength of character, vibrant personality, quick wit and love of life.
A graveside service will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, March 12, 2009 at Hebrew Rest Cemetery, under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin, Beaumont.
