Lola W. Bankston, 92, passed away February 2, 2009.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Denise Batschauer of Houston, Brian Roblow of Beaumont, Todd Gessel of Phoenix and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her children, Mary Mozelle Roblow and John Albert Bankston, and by her granddaughter, Michelle Lynn Roblow Rothwell.

Born July 2, 1916 in Grand Cane, Louisiana, Lola's family relocated to Beaumont, Texas when she was a young child. Lola graduated as an honor student from Beaumont High School and was fondly nicknamed "Fatso" by her classmates.

Lola retired from the Beaumont Police Department in 1981 after twenty years of service and was most commonly known as "Granny" by most of the police force.

Lola was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and of the Mary Martha Circle of United Methodist Women.

Lola had a keen appreciation for living life to its fullest. She enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world and telling of her adventures upon her return home. Gardening was her favorite past time and she was always intrigued with the variety of flowers and plants she encountered on her travels.

Lola will be remembered for her generosity and her ability to tell a good story to anyone who would listen. We will miss her dearly.

Her funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3810 North Major Drive, Beaumont with burial to follow at Magnolia Cemetery under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A gathering of her family and friends will begin at 5:00 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2009 at the Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pink Ribbons Project, 2449 South Blvd., Suite 100, Houston, Texas 77098 or at pinkribbons.org.

I visited with Lola quite often at her home and she would give me clippings from her flowers and plants. She will be greatly missed by everyone and she was a "special lady". I will always remember her and love her.

The African proverb, "It takes a whole village to raise a child" certainly applies to all I know about Granny. She and her family played an important and meaningful role in the rearing of our children. I will always be grateful for her role. Thanks again, Granny.

Some of my earliest memories are of spending time with Granny's family. In fact, Mozelle, Ted, Brian, Michelle, and Granny were much like a second family. Granny was full of laughter and kindness, and she never failed to pay attention to the kid from next door. She was a blessing to me, as I know she was to her own family and all who knew her.

With fond memories and love,

-Sam
