To the McElroy Family,
You all are in my prayers. I will never forget the 10 years or so that he was my stepdad . It was never a dull moment. When I heard the news, it brought me back to the the time he and I were headed out to start the day shrimping in the river... and of course it was 4 am and it was still dark. Little did I know at the time why he gunned the boat throwing me out of the culling board and ran ashore so quickly, that we were mearly a breath away from being killed by a barge we didnt see , it took him a while to re group... he never told me why or what happened that day until later because he knew if he had told me how close it was I would made him bring me back to the dock and would have never went again. He saved my life that day,or the day I got stuck in the hand with that fish, he jerked that fish out of my hand and headed ashore to get me to the hospital ..i was freaking out because i was bleeding and he was rubbing the fish's belly all over my gaping wound,
There are so many memories but my most favorite is when I had been taking care of him after his stroke... when he was NOT the curtis every one knew... when a SINGLE lean cuisine frozen dinner or a very normal portion served at a meal made him happy...he would get up and totally forget he was a smoker and go back to the recliner... the doctors all said he would be back to normal one day ,,,just like that, out of the blue...I was taking care of him while my mom was at work.... I got his lunch together and brought him to the bar in the kitchen,,,, he sat down.... ate it.... then looked up and said.. I'M HUNGRY !!!!!! In the normal Curtis voice... the Real Curtis was back... Needless to say the diet was off from that day forward.... and he remember what those marlboro lights were for. It was great to have him back.
I do hate to hear the news and I wish I could attend the graveside service, but I am out of town.
But we all know that he is in a much better place and the fishing is great there.
The last time I seen him was at the corner store.. 2 of my girls gave him a hug I was in the car and I overheard him saying I will always be your pawpaw.
Two of my kids got their middle names from him and his mom. Clay and Marie... great memories, all missed.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all .
My Peace, comfort and love be with you at this time.
