Dear Alyssa, Lauren, and family,

When I first met Tommy, he was in my conducting class at Lamar. He told me that he did not need my class because he already knew how to conduct. I asked him to show me a "4 pattern" and it was all over the room! I told him that perhaps we could help him refine his beat patterns and give him a little more clarity for his ensembles. By the end of the first class period he realized there was much he could learn, and by the end of the semester, he had become one of the most passioniate and easy to follow conductors I have taught. From those early beginnings through the time he became my voice student and a star in one of the operas I conducted, we became great friends. We had an "up and down" relationship in terms of music, but we had a continually growing relationship in terms of friendship. His winsome personality was unique. And, he knew more people in this area than I could imagine. If I ever needed any prop for opera - it didn't matter how bizarre it was - he could find it. I have never known anyone who was more resourceful. From my friends at Groves, I have learned that he used his musical skills well to touch the lives of many through worship and choir rehearsal. I wish I had done a better job of keeping in touch, but I am thankful that our lives crossed paths. --Don
