John S. Neil, Sr., 74, died June 22, 2008 at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth. He was born September 20, 1933 in Kansas City, Missouri to Jack and Jessie Neil. At the age of 2, the family moved to Beaumont where he spent the rest of his life. He graduated from Beaumont High School in 1951, attended two years of college and worked at Sun Oil Company until he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. Upon his return, he married Mary Jo Robichau and went into business with his father at KTRM Radio.

John was a past member of the Downtown Rotary Club, YMBL, and various other civic organizations. When the family business was sold, he went into the advertising business. In 1981, he started his own agency, John Neil Advertising, from which he retired in 2004. He loved having thirty years at Crystal Beach. After retiring, he sold the beach house and he and Mary Jo loved visiting cousins in Sanibel, Florida. The last year and a half of his life, he loved and found peace and contentment at “the farm”. He fought hard trying to beat prostate cancer, but in the end, he lost his battle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Jessie Neil. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Mary Jo Neil; sons, John, Jr. and wife Angie of Beaumont and Mike and wife Elva of Denver, Colorado; daughter, Becky and husband David Dickens of Fannett; grandchildren, Jack Neil, Jennifer Neil, John “Trey” Neil III, and Jami Davis all of Beaumont, Shawna Sandoval of Cathedral City, California, Lori Ann Barry of Lowell, Massachusettes, and Crystal Dickens of San Diego, California; great-grandson, Lucas Sandoval of Cathedral City, California; brothers, Bill Neil and wife Susan of San Angelo and Frank Neil of Houston; sister, Marilyn Love of Fort Worth; sister-in-law, Edna Robichau of Lufkin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be Wednesday, June 25, 2008, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin, Beaumont. I have always admired Mr Neil. Every time I was around him he was in high spirits. He displayed a character that I wish I had more of myself. He was known for loving his family and friends and that he would do anything for them. He was a great example in many ways and he will be deeply missed by many.

Well, I must say that the photo on this site of Mr. Neil, depicts him just the way I remember him. If he were to read this...he would be angry that I refer to him as Mr. Neil so this message is about "John". John was in my parent's wedding and I always heard what a fun man he was. My first job was with Channel 12 in Beaumont+ (advertising sales). I was told in my first few days with the station that John Neil had called and that he wanted me to come over to talk to him. I thought, wow...I know him, that really funny man that mom and dad used to tell me about. Shortly before my trip to John's office, our station manager warned me that I would never forget my visit with John Neil....and he was right! The minute I arrived at John's office, I met sweet Becky and I thought...this can't be that bad. I heard a loud voice in the other room on the phone saying interesting things and I thought surely, that could not be John Neil. Then I heard "Broussard, get in here!". At that point, I was bombarded with advertising questions and how I was going to save him money...and many other words and comments mixed in with that:) That first visit was one I will always remember. He taught me so much, challenged my knowledge and made me laugh at the same time. I heard some people refer to John as a "character" (in a good way). I will always remember John as a "Character" with character. He loved life and he had an impact on mine. God bless John and his family.
