I just found out that Greg passed away. He was such a wonderful man and always brought out the best in everyone. Greg appreciated and was in awe of everyone's special talents and gifts. It saddens me so - for the loss felt by those he touched, he met and his family. I wish I had known earlier so that his family and friends could be in my prayers at the time of their loss. The world lost a great man too early. May his gift to humanity carry on in his afterlife...goodbye Greg and thank you.

I'm sorry to hear about Dr. Phelps. I met him a little over 2 years ago when i wound up back in the ER. He then decided it was time for surgery. Both times I was in the hospital is was very great at what he did. He was always honest and put everything in english for us. Not in Dr's terms. You could hear him coming down the hallway whistling. The first thing he would do when he walked was go staright to my newborn daughter. He played with her the first thing when he got out of surgery. He had wonderful bedside manners and a great personality. He will be greatly missed and was a wonderful surgeon.

I ran into Greg at the VA hospital in 92 when I didnt have a clue where to go and we talked awhile and then he pointed out the direction I was looking for. He saved me a days worth of getting around the place. I didnt know him as good as Trent but He was the kind of Person who would help anyone. My name is Richard Weeks, and I am Greg’s uncle and his Godfather. At a very early age you knew Greg was very special. He was intelligent, had a great sense of humor, and was always fun to be around. I was living in the Houston area when Greg was in medical school. We always invited him to our parties and he and Jackie would come when they could. All of our friends loved being around both of them. When we would visit in Port Arthur, it was always good times when Greg was around. I did not know him as a Doctor. He kept that side very private, I assume out of respect for his patients. I just knew he was an excellent doctor. Reading comments from his friends, patients and peers has helped fill a big hole that is in my heart.

Dear Phelps Family, Greg was a loved and very special person to us who were fortunate to know and be close to him in college at A&M. I have too many fond memories too count with Greg, Mike, and Brad from those years. He always made us smile with his unique wit, charm, and perspective. He was always there for us. They say the bonds you make in college last forever. It must be true as though we seldom saw each other in the years after graduation, it was like we had never skipped a beat when we did get together. I will miss him very much and honor him by answering "Here!" in his place at Aggie Muster.

My sincere condolences are to the family. We attended high school together 26 years ago. But the past year we have actually become close. We would talk on a weekly basis..or he would send me a goofy text or two to make me laugh. He talked about Ava and Rob all of the time. Would call and give me details of what Ava was doing or talk about the ball game he was going to see Rob play in. I just built a new house, he came and looked at it and made all kind of funny comments. He knew how to make everybody laugh. He truly became a friend. I really wish I could have been there for him a little more. I am praying for him and his family every day, and missing him. Please remember to think of the funny things he did and said. Dr. Phelps will be greatly missed in the OR at The Medical Center of SETX. I worked with him for nine years. We shared many talks of our children and their accomplishments. He always had a theory on life or a funny story to tell. He always asked "Is everybody having a good time? Does everybody have a good seat?" We have lost a great surgeon as well as a great person. I loved him. He was a great man and surgeon. i can't imagine such a loss. I worked in Respiratory Therapy at St. Mary's and he never failed to talk to me...no matter how is day was going. He will be sorely missed.

My heartfelt sorrow goes out to the Phelps family and to all his friends and colleagues grieving his loss. I worked with Dr. Phelps ("Dr. Dude") in surgery at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas and enjoyed being assigned to his cases. I can truly say that he was never mean to the nurses, was always kind to his patients and was a very good surgeon. He was so smart and in fact knew any answer to crossword puzzles put to him when others were stumped. He lived down the street from me also, and I often saw him walking alongside Ava riding her bicycle down the street or going to get their mail. He was a good Daddy and often brought his children with him to make rounds. My sister, Babette, went with him to a Junior High dance at school and he and I got a kick out of talking about that. All of us in surgery at the Medical Center will miss him and our prayers are with you.

I will miss seeing him in the doctors lounge telling stories, cutting up, and eating ice cream with his kids. He always brighten my day. He always asked about my husband who is working overseas and about how I was holding up. He was such a kind-hearted and caring man. My heart aches at our loss. I pray that God watches over his family and helps them thru this difficult time. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

To the family of Dr. Phelps: Several years ago I was in the emergency room with a collapsed lung and Dr. Phelps was the surgeon who treated me - I was very afraid and in much pain. He calmed my fears and explained it would only take about 30 seconds and why he couldn't give me anything for pain until after the procedure. I told him his fabulous good looks would see me through the pain - but to hurry anyway. He laughed. He was so nice and I've never forgotten his kindness to me. I was so shocked to read of your loss and wish to convey my deepest sympathies to your family. I'm sure the medical community will feel his abscence for a long time.

Dr. Phelps was one of my favorite surgeons to work with. He was always easygoing and a great conversationalist. He kept his cool even during difficult surgeries and did a good job. I learned a lot from him as he was always willing to teach. It was never boring when he was around, and you never knew what humorous, intelligent observation he would come out with next. I always enjoyed talking to him, he was so well-read that you always learned something. Doc, you will truly be missed. Rest in Peace.

About five years ago, I was shot by a mugger with a hollow point bullet that exploded upon entry into my left leg. By the time I arrived to St. Mary’s Hospital, I had no feeling in my toes foot, and leg. Lying on the stretcher in the emergency parking lot I was warmly greeted by Dr. Robert G. Phelps. His piercing blue eyes comforting and gentle smile soothed the agonizing pain. In a kind bedside manner laced with an angelic voice, he asked me to wiggle my toes. I could not and then with a medical instrument that I could only imagine was cold held by his hand that even though I could not feel was no doubt warm. He tapped my foot as he asked pleadingly, “Did you feel that”? I replied no Doctor as a tear fell from my right eye. He then pierced my foot with a needle; again he asked pleadingly, “Did you feel that”? Again I replied no Doctor as more tears fell from my eyes. In nervous cracking voice, I asked Doctor Phelps concerned look on their faces as they glared. But suddenly my nervousness and fear of losing my leg was lost in the deep penetrating piercing eyes of “an Angel in the flesh” – Dr. Robert Gregory Phelps was his name. I raised my upper body and with my right hand grabbed his blue shirt near the collar. Pulling Dr. Phelps closer to hear my words, “In the name of Jesus Christ, you will save my leg”! As I was receiving the anesthesia, I prayed silently with faith that the operation would be successful. That I would awake with a “repaired” leg. When I awoken, I saw the gentle smile of my wife Jackie, radiating with joy. Without looking or reaching for my injured leg, I knew it was still attached even though I had no feeling. Because her eyes told me, “Honey your leg was saved”. But what I later found out was, a miracle had been performed. God had used Dr. Phelps for this miracle. For my wife was told in confidence and confirmed by another witness. That the “elder Doctor” whom was observed Dr. Phelps ttending to me in the emergency area parking lot, was the one originally assigned to do the surgery. But he made no effort to try to save my leg; he was going straight to an amputation procedure! But God answered my prayers putting Dr. Phelps in the preparation room in ear shot distance. When Robert heard those words uttered by the elder Doctor regarding amputation. Robert replied, “No you are not”! “He is now my patient and I will tend to him”! When Robert visited me in the post surgery ward, he told me that he did the best he could. That he was surprised that the artificial artery inserted immediately took to the body and functioned perfectly. That he saw a miracle. He then stated he was not sure that I could again walk on that leg. That it would take at least 8 months of painful rehabilitation and therapy. With confidence knowing God had used Robert in this miracle. I responded, “Dr. Phelps I know you did your best, now it’s in God’s hand the great divine physician. I will walk again and it will not be after 8 months of painful rehabilitation. I will walk much sooner”! Fifty nine (59) days later, I was up all night in agonizing pain. As I cried out to God pleading Him to end this pain and give me the final healing to walk. In frustration, I threw my crutches that my compassionate brother Victor, provided, across the dimed lighted living room. Which was my place of prayer. Then realizing that was a dumb thing to do, because now I would have to crawl to retrieve those crutches. As I crawled across the room crying in pain, I decided I was going to church that very day. It was about 6:00 am that glorious Sunday morning. At 10:30 am, I was seated on the front row at Harvest Time Bible Church on Johnson Blvd., Port Arthur Texas. At the end of the service Pastor Marvin Moore did something that he had not done before. For the special offering for a Missionary Ministry, instead of having the ushers pass the collection receptacles for offerings. He simply said for those you want to make an offering “COME”. Immediately, I knew that was Jesus speaking through Pastor Moore directly to “me”. Just as Jesus spoke directly to Peter, and said “COME”. Peter got out of the boat and walked on water! I knew this was my commandment to “COME” and have my miracle. Without hesitation, I stood up, leaving the crutches lying on the chair next to me. My wife grabbed my arm and tried to give me the crutches. I said “NO” and stopped her and the church member adjacent to me from aiding me. With boldness I took that first step with my injured left leg and planted my foot firmly on the floor and walked without an ounce of pain! I’ve been walking ever since and I have no limp. I even can jog, run, jump, skip, hop, and dance! All I know about Dr. Robert Gregory Phelps is that God used this willing servant to perform a miracle. To fulfill his divine purpose at that crucial hour, and this is ALL I need to know about Robert! Just as a single rock tossed into a pond, the effect produces multiple ripples! So will this single testimony of how God used Robert to do his part as a skilled surgeon. Preparing the way for the Great Divine Physician, Jesus Christ to perform the final miracle! He will have a continued rippling effect on the hundreds if not thousands or even millions of people that will read or hear this testimony. This miracle that can be verified by at least by over a 100 in attendance of church service. As Robert Gregory Phelps enters the gates of heaven, I can hear the words of a pleased awesome God proclaiming, “Well done! You will always be in our heart. May God comfort and console your family. I am sorry to hear about Greg's passing and offer my condolences. I remember Greg's sharp wit and he seemed to always be ready to smile. He had a presence about him that could fill the whole room. The community has suffered a deep loss, as well.

Greg....I remember the time my oldest son got in a motocross accident that caused a head injury and, while waiting a long time in Houston to be seen by the Emergency Room doctor, my son kept falling asleep and exhibiting other strange physical signs that had my husband and I feeling helpless and frantic. I called on you and you immediately answered my call, put John and I at ease with your professionalism, knowledge, care and concern, but most of all, your friendship. You called us later to see how he was doing. You went above and beyond when this friend called on you. I'll always hold that memory of you very, very dear. I will miss you and that unique sense of humor. Be in peace.

I had the pleasure to work with Greg at Renaissance Hospital, both in the O.R., and as the evening nursing supervisor. I always enjoyed our conversations and our game of classical rock trivia. He went to school with my little sister from the first grade and always asked how she and her family were doing. I will miss him and my thoughts and prayers are with his family, especially his children.

I was shocked to hear of the passing of Greg. I can remember always looking forward to doing the anesthesia for him at the Med Center of SE Texas.There were always great stories...mostly about Ava whom he loved beyond words. He was an excellent surgeon and made a point of befriending all of the people he worked with. He made an indelible mark on every life he touched-both patients and staff. May God welcome him into his Kingdom this great man. He will be missed.

Our hearts go out to you. Dr. Phelps saved my daughters life last year. His compassion and caring for my family and my daughter was unforgettable. He listened, he explained, and he made us all feel like we were the most important thing to him while he was dealing with us during our crisis. I for one will never forget him. I grew up around the corner from the Phelps family and went to school with Trent. Greg always seemed to be such a great guy and I know this loss is a huge one for all of his friends and family. May God comfort all of you in this time of mourning.

I had the pleasure of working with Greg for the last ten years. He was a good friend and always asked about my daughters. He gave money to help send my oldest to Hawaii for USA Choir, he was the only physician that did so. He also helped me get my First Assistant Certification and was letting me work with him to get my own business going. I will miss him very much. He was a very special person and had a wonderful heart. I am so sorry for your loss and you are in my prayers.

Dear Phelps Family, I knew Dr. Phelps through working with him at St. Mary's hospital. I work in the Recovery Room and have taken care of many of his patients postop. Dr. Phelps was a fine gentleman and also a good friend. He treated the nurses with respect. I will truly miss him and my prayers are with you all during this trying time.

Greg was one of the smartest & brightest people in our class of 1982 - and nice looking to top it off. In fact, he & Kathy Soape were voted "Most Likely To Succeed!" And succeed he did!
