Mary “Babe” Dasse Shumaker, 93, died peacefully at her home on December 24, 2007.
Mary was born April 2, 1914 to George and Catherine Dasse. In 1932 she graduated from Beaumont High School and later attended and graduated from Chenier Business School.
In 1935, she married Carlo Shumaker. She worked as a legal secretary for a number of years and then worked at the shipyard in Orange. After World War II she and Carlo opened Nu Way Poultry. Mary began bookkeeping duties there and kept that position until the business was sold in 1983.
Mary loved to play contract bridge and spent many good times at the Beaumont Bridge Studio. She also took many trips to the beach houses she and her husband owned over the years. Traveling the world provided memories of a lifetime. She also was known as a very good cook and had some favorite tunes she could play on the piano.
Her family was her world. She adopted her two daughters from Ireland and later becoming a grandmother which was one of the biggest highlights of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlo; and her sister, Sadie Budwine.
She is survived by her daughters, Sheila Stevens and husband Kenneth Stevens and Anne Shumaker; her two grandsons, Thad Stevens and Josh Stevens all of Beaumont; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2007 at St. Anne Catholic Church with burial to follow at Magnolia Cemetery under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin, Beaumont. A gathering of family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2007 at the mortuary.
