Eva Adler Swerdlow, a native of Beaumont, Texas, passed away on December 16, 2007, at the age of 88. Born on December 20, 1918, to Lily and Morris Adler, Eva attended Beaumont schools and graduated from Beaumont High at the age of 16. She was a co-owner of Adler’s, a downtown Beaumont icon for over seventy years. She was a member of Kol Israel Congregation and its Sisterhood, Temple Emanuel and its Sisterhood, and a lifetime member of Hadassah. She quietly supported other community and non-community causes.
A gentle, sweet lady with a good heart, Eva’s number one priority was her family. In her earlier years, she was an amazing gardener, and also enjoyed cooking, especially preparing for Rosh Hashanah luncheons and Shabbat dinners. As a merchant who treated her customers equally, taking her time to make certain they looked their best everyday or for special occasions, including their own funerals. She especially loved animals; her cats were her children, and she cared for them accordingly.
Eva was preceded in death by her son, Dr. Robert A. Swerdlow; her parents, Lily and Morris Adler; and her brother, Ben Adler.
She is survived by her devoted husband of sixty-four years, Nathan Swerdlow; her grandson, Matthew Swerdlow; her daughter-in-law, Marleen Roosth Swerdlow; her sister, Dora Adler Horwitz; many nieces and nephews; and other family and friends.
Special thanks to her caregivers/friends: Bessie Johnson, Mattie Randle, Lee Jackson, Shelia Gardner, and Jessie Simmons.
Mrs. Swerdlow’s funeral will be 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19th, at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin followed by burial at Kol Israel. Rabbi Barbara Metzinger of Temple Emanuel and Rabbi Matt Michaels will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers/food, the family requests that donations be made to Temple Emanuel, 1120 Broadway, Beaumont, Texas 77701, either to the Kol Israel Chapel Fund or the Temple Restoration Fund, or a charity of your choice.
