I am so sorry to hear of Mark's passing. I realize it's been years, however I just found out. I was a friend of Mark's in the Air Force. We worked together in the engine shop on RAF Lakenheath in England. We worked the swing shift and had a lot of down time so we used to talk a lot! He was living off base at the time. One night there was a horrible storm, and he opened up his back door and let a lost cat in with the intentions of only sheltering her for the night. That cat had a litter of kittens on his kitchen floor that night. He came to work and told us all about the cat and kittens. He was pretty dismayed because he had no intentions of having a pet cat, let alone one with an entire litter! And his land lord didn't even allow pets in the house. We lived off base too and my daughter was about 19 months old at the time, so we went over to Mark's house to let my daughter pick out one of the kittens. Well, she didn't choose a kitten, she chose the Mama cat! Mark was very pleased with that because he knew he probably wouldn't have trouble finding homes for the kittens but what was he going to do with the Mother? We adopted her and kept the name Mark had given her. He called her 'Pepper' It suited her since she was a gray and black striped tabby so we kept the name. When we separated from the Air Force and came back to the states we brought 'Pepper' back with us. So that British cat got to retire in Florida. She lived to be about 13 years old. Not too bad for a pregnant stray cat who was lost in a storm in the night.
Anyway, I considered Mark a good friend. We had many conversations about many interesting topics and I am glad I was privileged enough to have known him. He was a truly kind person. My most sincere condolences to all of his family.
