Jonathan Michael Bailey

It's almost been two weeks since we lost Jonathan, and it is still so hard to face that reality. He's been such a good friend and inspiration to all of us and he will always be remembered. I feel lucky to have Jonathan as well as the rest of the Bailey family as cousins and our big family definitely won't be the same without him. We love you, Jon!!!

** Perhaps your greatest strength will come in the form of remembering how he dared to live, as opposed to focusing on how he needlessly died. Look towards the hills, whence cometh your help. God's peace and blessings on you and your family during this dark hour.

I'm not sure just what to say or how to say it but here goes. I remember first meeting Jon and Janson at the YMBL tournament in Beaumont. William Morrisey introduced them to me as "the Bailey Brothers". Never in a million years would I know that the simple introduction that he gave would ring in my heart and mind forever. I've replayed that day many times since this has all happened. I attend Texas A&M and the night of the incident was at work at the hospital. The next morning a friend of mine called me up and I just brushed off the conversation and didn't think much more of it. Later that night William told me that it was the "Bailey Brothers" that the media was talking about. My heart just dropped. Over the past three months I have lost so many friends due to senseless accidents that I have had a hard time coping. My mom told me to NEVER EVER question God. All that He does is for a reason. I'm holding on to what she has told me and asking God for strength for the entire Bailey family and the many people who's lives Jonathan touched during his brief walk with us. I don't know why but I know that God has him another faithful servant. Jonathan, could you please watch over me as I continue to struggle each and every day, and help wipe some of the tears that I can't seem to stop crying. Dearest David and the Bailey Family, I can not express the shock and a hole in the heart feeling I have for you. My husband,Shane and I saw the news about this tragedy but did not realize it was about your two precious boys. My brother, Mike died in an accident at the age of 21 and I know he is in heven so I prayed for him to reach out to your son, Jonathan and be a big brother to him in heaven. David I know it has been a long time since we have seen each other, but I will always remember the time we spent growing up together as most precious. You have always been a dear, sweet person that would give your shirt to help another person. I know there is nothing I can say to help take away the pain, deep loss and sadness. I have known Alex for 6 years now and have had the privelege to get to know Johnathan through him. He was a wonderful guy...smart, cute & funny and I will never forget him. Jon, I just wanted to thank you for showing all of us at Rice what it means to live. As a teammate, your determination and dedication was clear. I'll never forget how mad you were after the loss at Memphis this past season. At the time, I was confused why you, a guy that hadn't played any in the game was the most upset of all. I now realize that if you really care about your team, the individual does not matter. Also, as a brother, I sincerely respect the relationships you had with yours. Those without brothers close in age do not understand that, as time goes on, you begin to view your brothers as best friends as well as family and I think that is one of life's great gifts. Jonathan- I pray you know how much I valued your friendship and the time we shared. My biggest regret is not being a better friend while I had the time. You definitely had an impact on who I am today, and I will never forget the time we did have together. You will always have a place in my heart. I’m not sure where to start something like this…I can’t really express what Jon meant to me personally in words, but I’m going to try. He was one of the kindest, most driven person I ever met. He gave 110% to everything he did, including his family and friends. He would drop everything he was doing to come help family/friends in need. That is one sentence that would define the person that is, Jonathan Bailey. That is one of many reasons he was respected by so many. I will never forget that little, skinny, smooth talking freshman, with this swagger, and bravado, even at 15, that became a brother. From the day I met him till the day he was taken from us, I could, and still will call Jon, at anytime of the day, to help me with my problems. When I wanted to leave school, he is the one that stayed up with me. We played 1 on 1 until I won, until about 6:30am, talking about it, and him instilling in me why I needed to stay in school. (granted, he probably let me win after about 6 hours, but it is a drive I still carry with me today). He is the reason I am still in school to this day. He always helped Even being 2 years younger than I, I looked up to him like a brother. Whether it was about hoops, politics, or anything worth debating, Jon would listen to your argument, and then show you that you are wrong. He was probably the most intelligent person I ever met. And when he thought you had forgotten, he would tell you how much his family meant to him. Even after he left for college, he never forgot where he came from and what matters most. I can’t begin to tell you how much I respect Jon for embracing Chris like he did when he was battling Chrones Disease, or when he let Josh come live with him and was a father figure to him in Houston. All this, and he was at a first class institution of higher learning, a walk on Division 1 basketball player, and putting himself through school. That is a tribute to you Mrs. Bailey. You raised Jonathan and 3 other boys into men, by yourself. I do not know another person that could do that. Even though I have left for college, I want you to know the times I spent at your house with your sons, made me feel like family and I look to all of them as brothers. You always said, “A Family that eats together, stays together.” He touched the lives of everyone he came across with his carefree personality. He was one of few people did not exist in this world, he lived in this world.

I am still in disbelief of the news I received of Jonathan. Jonathan and I were friends only for a short while during high school. We had lost touch over the years. He has obviously touched the lives of so many. He will always hold a special place in my heart. Ms. Bailey, you raised such wonderful young men. I have only had the pleasure of getting to know Jonathan and Janson. My heart aches for you and your family at this difficult time. May God be with you. Janson, keep your head up. Dear Bailey family, I never had the pleasure of meeting you but my son, Christopher Maggard, graduated from West Brook with Jonathan and Janson. Chris nows attends Texas A&M so he was in College Station the night of this tragedy. When he heard about what happened he was devastated. Ive looked at this page everyday for the past week hoping that some amazing, insightful words would come to me but much like I was Thursday monring when I recieved that phone call, I continue to find myself at a loss of words. I can still quite vividly remember the first day I met your faimly. I was a junior and jonathan and janson were only in the 8th grade. I remember getting pulled out of class and called into the student council office to take the two of them on a tour of the school since they would be transfering the next year as freshman, and the rest is history. My entire senior year was filled with walking out to my car to find one of them waiting for me to bring them home. Monday nights were always spent at ya'lls house after stuco meetings. I thought your house was crazy!! Always so much going on, so much love, laughter, and the choas of a house with four boys under one roof! I love each of your dearly and you all know that. The road ahead will be quite painful and difficult, but youre still and always will be the Baileys. You guys pull together and make it through everything! And just beacause Jon is not physically here anymore, a part of him will live on in each of you, and each of us forever. His kind-heartedness, love, compassion and wisdom will be carried on by all of us who loved him and will continue to tell his story. First and foremost I want to say to Ms. Bailey: job well done. Jon was a good friend of mine from West Brook during basketball season and also since he moved to Houston to attend Rice we became even closer since I also moved here to attend Texas Southern. He was one of the most respectful, fun-filled, happy and memorable young men that I have ever known. Basketball is something that I love and I know how much Jon loved it also and I will always remember when we traveled to Canada and both the womens and mens teams earned 1st place. You were always there to support him and Janson and that type of commitment was passed down to all of your sons. You have molded them to follow your example of Christianity, respectfulness and of course class. To Mr. Bailey I never knew you but be encouraged, your son was a diamond in the rough. Thank you both for sharing your son with me, he always brought joy to my heart and a smile to my face, even when I wasn't happy. To the Bailey brothers: I love all of you and I am praying for you daily. Janson keep your head up, Jon would want you to continue being who you are and living your life as you were before this. Josh (my little boo, lol) I am praying for you and I know you will be ok after this is all over. You know you can always call on me for anything and I am right here in Houston so you can always just ask. Chris, you don't know me as well as the others but I remember you and Josh at practice at WB everyday running around and just being boys. Your brother loved you with all of his heart and he wants you to succeed in everything. I know that God is in control and though we may not see the good in this situation everything works out for the better. God doesn't make mistakes and he has used Jon as an example of how we should live our lives to the fullest and respect others at all times and most of all Love Hard, because that is what Jon always did. As a friend of the Bailey brothers I want to say to the rest of the family, friends, colleagues and coaches: I will continue to pray for you because prayer will get you through this time. Ms. Bailey, I don’t know if you knew this, but Jonathan, Josh, and Janson had played on my church league basketball team at Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. We actually had a game last Wednesday night, but without hesitation Jonathan called me that morning to tell me he wouldn’t be able to make it, as he was going to “CS for Janson’s birthday.” Not thinking about it twice I casually dialed my contacts to find a replacement for him. Later that night fellow teammate Charlie Buser asked me where Jon and Josh were, and I replied, he’s in CS for Janson’s birthday. Despite the fact we have both known Jonathan for about 7 years, we completely forgot he was a TWIN…it was HIS birthday too! I tell you this story as a testament to the kind of brother that Jon was, where even his own birthday was not about him, it was about his brother(s) and making all sacrifices (even basketball!) to be with him. Since last Wednesday, all past and future league games have opened with a prayer and explanation of the sheer fragility of life and the eternal ramifications of knowing Jesus Christ as Savior. Very soon you too will undoubtedly see, as I saw through the West Brook bus tragedy that took my cousin from this earth, the lives that will be eternally altered through even the most horrific of situations. The thoughts and prayers of the Brown family and this inner Houston Men’s Basketball League will continue to lift you and your family up.

To the Bailey Family; May God stay with you all through this time-- and always. Diana, you were an inspiration to me as a single parent, when my son was in junior high. The love and upbringing YOU gave your boys;has surely spread from WBHS to the very tips of TEXAS. Your son, brother, grandson, friend is in heaven now with GOD. Diana: Words cannot express the sorrow I feel for you and the noys. I have known you for the past 20 years and you and I have been hrough a lot together. You were there in prayers and kind words through my Dad's illness and surgery offering words of encouragement and prayers. This past fall through my surgery and the devastating outcome you were there with prayer, inspirational thoughts and encouraging words. You always tell me you admire my courage and strength but it is I who have always admired your faith in God and your strength. You are and have always been a fantastic mother and have lived an exemplary life as God wants us all to live. As you and I discussed when I was in ICU last fall God allows everything to happen for a reason and we must not question HIS action but allow HIM to work through us and realize all things happen for a reason. Jonathan is in a far better place with God and as much as you and the boys will miss HIM know Jonathan has achieved the ultimate goal--to be with our Lord and Savior. I hope you guys find some peace in the days to come. I went to elementary school with the twins and then later to high school with them. We went to Harvest Christian Fellowship where we were all in a SMALL youth group and would hang out with Karis Vick afterwards. Janson, I hope you recover well and hold on to the good times you guys had together. I know how close the two of you were. Anytime I saw one of you guys, I would always see the other. Just goes to say that you guys were always together. Ms. Bailey, you and your boys will be in my prayers. Just know that you have so much support through this rough time. I always laughed at the thought of you appearing to be tiny and fragile, but you sure could keep those boys in line. You have raised four intellegent, and hard working boys who love you dearly. Diana, Just wanted you to know I'm praying for you and your family as you try to make it through this very difficult time. Look to the Lord for your strength and he will hold you up. I don't know if you know that I lost my 23 year old son 2 years ago and I know the struggle you will live with every day. There will be a hole in heart that nothing or no one can replace. Ms. Bailey, Jonathan, Jansen, Josh and Chris. There is no other family in the world I look upon like yours. Since I could drive, every morning I would be at your house by 6:00 in the morning so I could get the boys awake and get them to school. I remember the long walks me and Ms. Bailey would take together to talk about our lives and what was going on. I love each one of you with all my heart and I am praying for the family and Jonathan many times a day. You would all treat me so well and respectfully like I was as much a part of the family as if I was born into it. Chris, I'm so very sorry you had to witness this horrible tragedy. I can't imagine the pain and suffering you are having right now. Jansen, I thank God that you are ok. I've checked in with the hospital at least ten times a day making sure you get out of critical condition. I know you are in stable care now and getting better. You take good care for now and heal so you will stay healthy. Josh, you were always like a little brother to me, which I've never had, and I know this time is hard for you also. And last but never least, Ms Bailey, You've always treated me as your own. We've been through good times and bad, but you'd always talk to me and whatever the problem, we would get by. And we will get through this also. Everyone has known Jonathan was a great friend to me, one of my only true friends. When I was in Houston, I'd always stop by Rice and we'd hang out. I've been there for all of you for every problem, and I will be there for you all the way this time. Jonathan, where do I even begin? It's been almost a year since we've last talked. I still remember the day we met, like it was yesterday. I walked into the Eskimo Hut, you and Janson were standing there and you told me you would give me my drink free, if I gave you my number. Then the fun began. You were like a little brother to me there for a while. I remember the day you left for school...you thought I would forget about you...NEVER! I'm so sorry we didn't keep in touch better than we did after I got married. You were a beautiful person with so much going for you. I will cherish the memories we had together forever...me, you, Brooke and Janson. Y'all lied to us and told us y'all were 20...when really y'all were only 18. I remember that I always told you I was going to kick your butt in basketball...only we never got to play. I was so shocked and hurt when I learned what happened to you and your brother. My heart goes out to your brother because I know a huge part of him is gone forever...that is you. I know you have touched so many people and there will always be a place in my heart for you. I didn't know you were playing ball at Rice. For the record, I am SO proud of you for that. Watch over us all and be our angel in heaven. I love you baby boy!

I dont know where to start except to say you are and always will be my one of four sons i cherrish with all my heart and soul. To know you wont fulfill your dream in life is pain in my heart, and knowing you jonathan was one of the greatest gifts god granted me, i miss the times we shared playing basketball, and wakeing you boys up every morning to get ready for school, you were always the leader.you were a great son to your mother and great leader to your brothers. I will miss our talks about life and goals you had. You made me the proudest man in the world when you put your arm around me and called me dad. My sweet and wonderful friend, You were my whole world. Every afternoon, I'd go to your locker, or you'd come to mine, or I'd find you in the Student Council office, eating the food in the refrigerator, waiting on me. I spent every afternoon in your car, most Tuesday nights at your games, and countless other hours thinking about you. You were so much more than so many people know. Underneath that swagger, and that bold attitude, you were brilliant, unbelieveably intelligent and intuitive, and had a kindness that made me proud to be your friend. Not many people understood our friendship, we came from such different crowds. But I will never forget the way your letter jacket smelled, or the way you looked on Prom night, or how hard you laughed when we would go see stupid movies like Barbershop. I remember everything. Everything. I loved you so much more than everyone knew, but I know that YOU knew. You made me feel more alive than many people have before, or since, and I will miss you forever. You were my sweet, sweet, wonderful friend, and my heart is breaking right now. I love you, Jon.

I cannot express my deepest love for the Bailey family. As a teacher and coach from West Brook, I had the opportunity to coach four Bailey sons. Jonathan was a competitor. In every area of his life he wanted to be the best, to make the most of his abilities. He was a driven young man who personified perserverance, hard work, and compassion. He was a coach's player, a teammate's friend, a brother's brother, and parent's pride and joy. I can say with a heavy heart that Jonathan will enjoy eternity with Our Father. His life is a tribute to his wonderful mother and his brothers. I appreciate the opportunity to have known and to have been a part of his life.
