N.A. Smith was born in Houston County, Texas on November 21, 1916, and passed away February 13, 2007 in Beaumont, Texas. The son of Nancy Almeda Hallmark and Newton Alexander Smith, he came from a pioneer Texas family who fought for Texas Independence and the creation of the Republic of Texas.

He taught in Pasadena High School before being commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy in 1942. Following the war and service in Europe he attended South Texas College of Law and was licensed in 1952.

As an attorney he represented various corporations, and was involved in chartering banks, and the development of the cities of Pasadena and Deer Park. He ended his legal career as judge of the County Court at Law when he retired to his ranch in Houston County.

He is preceded in death by his son, Ney. He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Mary Frances Floyd Smith; daughters, Sherry Brackin and husband Bill, and Priscilla Craft and husband Robert; daughter-in-law, Betsy Smith; grandchildren, Stacey Smith, Stephanie Miller, Alex Smith, Elizabeth Allen, Katie Sadler, Anna Craft and Emily Craft; and five great grandchildren.
