Phyllis Gish, 56, a rebel throughout her life, finally found eternal peace November 10, 2006. A lifetime Beaumont resident, Phyllis died at home after a long struggle with illness.
To her family and friends, Phyllis was always a little “crazy” and offbeat. But she seemed to relish the role and delighted in keeping everyone a little off balance. Like everyone she had her share of faults and shortcomings, but those of us who knew her loved her anyway.
She was probably the most giving person on the planet -- generous to a fault. She literally gave the clothes off her back if she thought someone was in need. And even if they weren’t in need, that made no difference. She’d sacrifice her own wants for those of others. If she was ever short of cash, chances are it was because she gave it away to someone she thought needed it more. In matters of mind and heart, Phyllis always went with the heart.
She was a nurturer by nature and for many years was a practicing nurse.
Phyllis was creative and funny. She loved to dress up and before going to any event, would probably change clothes at least a dozen times before deciding what to wear. She loved the beach and prided herself on being over 50 and still able to wear a bikini. Even though she never had lessons, she played the piano and could sing. As a child, she entertained many with her rendition of the Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace.”
Phyllis is survived by her brother, Joe Penna, his wife Pam and their two daughters Carlen Ellison and Misty Penna; her sister, Angela and her husband Charles; several cousins, especially her special cousins Louis and Josie Serafino; and loving friend and caregiver Randy Choate.
All of us give thanks for Phyllis’ too brief life here on earth. Watch out, Heaven, a new resident is on her way, and she’s ready to raise a little hell!
