Delma “Joy” Erwin, 85, of Pinewood died October 31, 2006 at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth.

She worked for Lamar University and later moved to South Park High as secretary to the registrar. After few years, she moved to Regina Howell Elementary as secretary until her retirement. She was with the South Park Independent School District for twenty years, was a member of First Baptist Church of Sour Lake, and her Sunday school class was B.Y.K.O.T.A., which she loved. She loved the youth and enjoyed doing things for them.

In her later years after retirement, she moved to Pinewood and met and became friends with many in the community. She loved her grandchildren and their friends to come over for treats and ice cream. Everyone knew her and called her Mama Joy. Her family was her greatest love.

She is survived by her husband of sixty-seven years, Bill Erwin of Pinewood; daughter, Judy Baker and her husband Darrell Wesley of Pinewood; grandchildren, Melissa Holmes and her husband Shannon of Pinewood, and Dr. Trent Baker of Hollywood Beach, Florida; great grandchildren, Kaden and Kale Holmes; sister, June Crawford and her husband Cornie of Beaumont; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joy was preceded in death by her sister, Vadna Carlisle.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 3, 2006 at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive followed by burial at Haven of Rest Cemetery. A gathering of her family and friends will be Thursday evening from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the mortuary.

Friends, family members and acquaintances remember the life of a dynamic true friend, perfect wife, perfect mother, grandmother, and “Mama Joy” to many neighborhood children. Angels are messengers from God, sent by God to lead us to a higher more noble way of living. Joy was an angel, she shared the message of her life with all of us and what a message it was.

We will always remember her sense of humor, her dignity, her values and honesty, her infinite caring, her love of her grandchildren and their friends, her loyalty to her school and school mates. Her family and friend get togethers were filled with laughter and great food.

Mama Joy had a beautiful energy about her that I felt the moment I was graced by her presence. I had the pleasure of being treated with her southern cooking, welcoming home, and genuine smile when I came to Sour Lake with Trent. She couldn't have been more gracious and beautiful. I could sense the happiness and love she had for her husband and family. She treated me like I was her own granddaughter, it was if I had grown up there in her home. It was divine to meet an angel in this lifetime. My wishes for the Erwin/Baker family are eternal peace and sunshine, and for realization that they are among her divine presence every waking day.

Mama Joy was one of the most kind, gentle people I've ever met. She was clearly devoted to her family, and her love for them was evident in meeting her. It was a privilege to know her and her family, all of whom seem to embody her very best qualities. Mama Joy will be sorely missed by all, but her spirit lives on in her family.
