Edna Elizabeth Martin, 89, of China died October 25, 2006 at The Clairmont. A native of Morgan City, Louisiana and resident of China since 1993, Edna had lived most of her life in Liberty and Spurger.
She is survived by her daughters, Jaunelle Butcher and her husband Billy of China, and Shirley Eberwein and her husband Francis of Escondido, California; sons, Daniel N. Martin and wife Paula of Houston, and Clarence A. Martin and wife Jo Ella of Liberty. She had thirteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.
Edna is a descendant of Joseph Molaison (her great great grandfather), one of the original Acadians, who arrived by ship to settle in Louisiana in 1785.
As a child, Edna lived in Franklin, Louisiana, where she attended school and then married Albert J. Martin on November 12, 1934. A few years later, Albert Martin became employed by United Gas (now Center Point Energy) in New Iberia, Louisiana, and then transferred to Liberty, Texas where their four children attended school.
With the children gone from home and husband retired, Edna and Albert moved in 1973 to Spurger, Texas, where they enjoyed camping, fishing, and raising vegetables for their family and friends.
Upon the death of her husband, Albert, in 1993, Edna moved to China, Texas, to be close to her family. She continued to live an active life with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. You could see her face “light-up” with a big loving smile whenever they came for a visit.
Edna was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Liberty for over twenty five years and thereafter a regular member at the Catholic churches in Woodville and China.
To Edna Martin, being a wife, mother, and a Catholic were the most important accomplishments in her life.
