Dr. Eileen Tiedt

Dr. Eileen Tiedt (ET to those who knew and loved her) died at her home on March 25, 2006. She was born on April 27, 1938 in Dublin, Ireland, although her birth wasn’t registered by the midwife until May 1, 1938. She thought it was great fun celebrating two birthdays every year.

Eileen grew up in Ireland under the loving eye of her parents, her two brothers and three sisters. She entered the convent of the Sisters of the Divine Savior at the age of fifteen. She chose to serve her religious community as a nurse and went to school at Marquette University in Michigan where she received her Baccalaureate Degree in 1962 and continued her studies and received a Masters Degree in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing at Wayne State University in 1970 and her Doctoral Degree in Curriculum Development at Ohio State University in 1978. She held a variety of nursing and teaching positions and was Chair of the Department of Nursing at Lamar University in Beaumont from 1981-1994. Eileen was a member of Sigma Theta Tau international nursing honor society and was a member of the Lamar University Kappa Kappa chapter. She retired from Lamar in 1966 and was very happy living her life as she pleased and often shared many happy memories of the students that passed through her life, serving her religious community at Salavadore Mondi International Hospital in Rome, Italy and at the Vatican and stories of family and friends in Ireland, Canada and elsewhere.

We will always recall ET’s sense of humor, her love for all animals, her famous gourmet cooking, cheesecake and Christmas cookies, as well as her known phrase like “my home looks like who did it and ran”, “we’ve arrived and to prove it we are here” and her favorite “immigration suit” that she loved wearing when she didn’t have to dress up.

Eileen in preceded in death by her mother, Margaret, her father, Michael ;and her beloved older brother, William Tiedt; and her precious eldest sister, Margaret (Maggie) Smith. She is survived by her loving sisters, Ann Doherty of Toronto, Canada, Mary Connolly and Katherine (Kitty) Reilly both of Dublin, Ireland; sister-in-law, Bridget Tiedt of Dublin, Ireland; baby brother, Charles (Charlie) Tiedt of London, England; brother-in-law, Liam Smith of Dublin, Ireland; numerous nieces and nephews as well as many friends, family and students whose lives she touched.

Cremation arrangements are held under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A gathering of family and friends will be held Thursday, April 6, 2006 from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. at the mortuary.

My Aunt Eileen was a major inspiration in my life. Throughout my life she encouraged and supported me in my education. She sent posters, and information on different subjects, which helped me achieve high marks in my school projects. She inspired me to study for a degree, and she was very proud when I graduated with honours. Eileen was a warm and caring person, who loved her various pets, as if they were her children. She would have made a wonderful mother. However, she was a fantastic Aunt and mentor. We enjoyed long telephone conversations about every subject under the sun , including politics. She had strong views, but always expressed them with great humour. I feel deeply priviledged to be her niece and comforted that we share the same gene pool. I will never forget her, and when I close my eyes, I can still hear her laughter and cheerful voice. Auntie Eileen was a unique individual, and the world is a better place for her having lived in it. She touched everyone who knew her in a very special way. May she rest in peace.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Tiedt. She was a great woman. I remember struggling to make ends meet when I was a student in the nursing program. She would check in with me each semester just to be sure I could cover my tuition. I always managed somehow, but Dr. Tiedt would say "you let me know if you can't make it, we'll find a way". Thanks to her and to the Mcfaddin Ward sholarship, I graduated from nursing school and moved on to a career in nursing and self employment. I would see her every now and then in the produce department at Market Basket (was she always there?). We would talk and catch up and she would fuss about politics, she would tell me some jokes then tell me she was proud of me. That meant so much to me. I will miss that. My prayers and condolences go out to her friends and family. Memories of her will be cherished and she will be greatly missed. Suzy James
