Ruth Briggs, 91, of Beaumont died November 24, 2005 at Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital. She was born on April 5, 1914 to Rote and Martha Odella Roy in Sweetwater, Tennessee. When she was four years old, nineteen of her family members came to Texas by train and settled in Wellington, Texas. She graduated from high school there and was married to Glenn Briggs in 1935. They were transferred to Beaumont in 1952 with United Gas Corporation. She was the last member of her generation of the Roy family and was also preceded in death by her husband.
She was known to her old neighborhood friends as Briggs, her contemporaries as Ruth, and her former kids from mother’s day out as Miz Ruth. But those closest to her called her Ginny. She was a long-time member of Westgate Memorial Baptist Church, where she served as church hostess in years past. She was happiest ministering to others in whatever capacity she could, a faithful friend and a helpful neighbor. Her favorite times were spent planning, preparing and serving meals and making her annual Christmas candies for family and friends.
The following family members give thanks for having such a loving and nurturing woman in their lives, her daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Roy Huckaby; grandchildren, Lisa and Todd Anderson of Tallahassee, Florida, Susan and Brent Huckaby of Arlington, Texas, Amy and Chris Graham of Beaumont, Texas; her beloved great grandchildren, Taylor, Sarah and Keller Huckaby, Nathaniel Graham; also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
