Mary Weed Fletcher, 101, of Austin, died Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at Westminster Manor in Austin.
She was born December 27, 1903 to James F. Weed and Cora Strobel Weed in Beaumont, Texas. She was the daughter of Spindletop pioneers and prominent Beaumont leaders. She was very strong in her faith, and very generous, with a great love of family. Mary was a world traveler and great sports woman who excelled in hunting, fishing and golf.
She graduated from Beaumont High, attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and graduated from University of Texas in 1922. Mary was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha and a “University of Texas Beauty”.
She married Jack Ligon Fletcher on June 16, 1925 and they resided at Karankawa Ranch in Jackson County and then in Beaumont most of her life. For the last twenty years she resided in Austin.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Mary Jo Halbirt and her husband John of Houston; grandchildren, Kirstin Poulson Gau and husband Dennis of Magnolia, Texas, Kyle Knute Poulson and wife Erin of Fort Worth, William Andrew Fletcher of Los Angeles, California; great grandchildren, Conner and Brandon Gau and baby Mary Abigal (due in one month) Grayson and Jackson Poulson; nephews, James P. Jackson of Wimberley, Thomas Weed of Houston and Bruce W. Jackson of Beaumont and many loving great nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Fletcher, her son, Marion Weed Fletcher; sister, Margaret Weed Jackson; brother William F. Weed; son-in-law, Knute Poulson.
Graveside services will be 11:30 A. M. Saturday, August 20, 2005 at the Weed Mausoleum in Magnolia Cemetery under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin, Beaumont. A gathering of family and friends will be 9:30 A. M. until 11:00 A. M. Saturday, August 20, 2005 at the mortuary.
