Luther P. Hendon, 86, of Beaumont passed away Sunday, May 22, 2005 at his home in Beaumont, with his loving wife of sixty years at his side.
Luther was born on January 23, 1919 in Cherokee County, Georgia. He met the love of his life, Lorene Battle in 1943 while serving in the United States Army during World War II. They married on April 8, 1945 and celebrated sixty years of marriage on April 8, 2005. After the war, Luther and Lorene moved to Georgia, then to Texas, where they raised five children. He moved the family to Beaumont in 1957. Luther and Lorene started Dixie Vacuum Tanks in 1962 and by 1970 they had over hundred trucks operating from Bay City, Texas to Narco, Louisiana. He sold his companies in 1971 and moved to Crystal Beach, thinking there he was ready to retire. Four years later he moved back to Beaumont where he started Luther Hendon, Inc. That company grew to over hundred employees under his skilled management. During those years he met and made many friends. He finally decided to retire in 1986 and spent much of his time at “the beach house” enjoying his favorite past time … fishing. Luther was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years.
Luther is survived by his wife, Lorene Hendon of Beaumont; sons, Pierce Hendon and his wife Deb of Baytown, Larry Hendon and his wife Kathy of Beaumont, and Jimmy Hendon of Beaumont; daughter, Christene Warren and her husband Mike of Sour Lake; daughter-in-law, Sheri Hendon-Irwin of Lindale; grandchildren, Lori Hendon Manning, Robin Hendon Watts, Trey Hendon, Keri Hendon, Rachel Hendon, Rebekah Hendon, Scooter Hendon, Cody Hendon, Chrisy Warren, Becky Warren and Jeremy Warren; five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, W. Keith Hendon.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at Calvary Baptist Church with a graveside service following at 1:00 p.m. at Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Woodville under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A gathering of family and friends will be Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the mortuary.
Luther always had a positive outlook on life and a strong desire to carry on. Luther was one of those few who never met a stranger. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
