Glenn Ray Hays, 63, of Nederland, lost his battle with cancer February 19, 2015. He died peacefully in his home surrounded by family and loved ones. Glenn was born in Port Arthur, Texas on September 4, 1951, to the late Dale Hays and Sally Thibault. He graduated from Bishop Burns Catholic High School in 1969. He earned a BS in math and a Master’s degree in school administration from Lamar University in Beaumont. He married the love of his life Debra in 1977. Debra and Glenn were co-founders and members of Triangle Baptist Church, where Glenn served as a deacon of the church for 28 years.

Glenn was a lifelong educator and student. After being laid off from Texaco in 1984, he began his teaching career. He was a math teacher at Lincoln High School in Port Arthur and later went on to become an assistant principal there. When the high schools consolidated, Glenn was assistant principal of the 9th grade campus until he retired in 2005 from Port Arthur I.S.D. In 2009, he went back into the classroom as a math teacher, at Johnson’s Bayou in Louisiana. He remained teaching up until this past December. He had recently enrolled in Lamar University to continue his education by pursuing a doctorate.

Glenn is survived by his wife Debra Hays; two children: Kris Hays and wife Kerri, and daughter Kammie Hays of Nederland; and grandchildren: Shelby, Taylor, and Caleb Hays and Abriella Johnson; brother and sister-in-law Lynn and Kathy Miller; niece Ashleigh Miller DuChamp and husband Mitch; siblings: Larry Hays and wife Evelyn of Baton Rouge, La, William “Punkin” Hays of Savannah, GA, Jan Hazelton of Austin, TX, Johnny Whelply of Greenville, TX, and Sara Blanco and husband Randy of Nederland, TX.

Glenn was a great person and a great Assistant Principal . He served as my right hand for two years while serving as Principal of the Memorial Ninth Grade. I have never had such an excellent co-worker. We were a team and made great strides at the Memorial Ninth grade campus. In my forty two (42) years as an educator and many of those as a principal, I can say without reservations he was the best.
May he rest in peace.

My deepest and most sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Hays. He was my 9th grade geometry teacher at Lincoln in 1988. Math was always my weakest subject but Mr. Hays was a GREAT teacher--especially to the most vulnerable students on campus (freshmen). 13 years later, I returned to my alma mater to begin my career in education as a permanent substitute. Mr. Hays was an AP by then. He remembered me and was a huge help in my adjustment to my new working environment. He touched the lives of hundreds of students and staffers in his lifetime. Thank you all for sharing him with us. He will truly be missed and was a remarkable educator and man.
