Alton O. Laird, age 67, of Beaumont, Texas, passed away on Friday, October 31, 2014, after a protracted illness. He was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on July 25, 1947, to the late Jake Laird and Ola Davis Laird. Alton was a graduate of Port Neches-Groves High School and attended Lamar University. A long-time resident of Beaumont, Alton was a pillar of the community as a faithful member of the Westgate Church of Christ, the business owner of Alton’s Automotive, Inc. for forty-three years, and an active participant in several charities. He loved helping the homeless, widows, orphans, and those that society had brushed aside. An avid hunter and fisherman, Alton loved the outdoors and was extremely proud of his family, and especially his grandchildren. He loved talking with people and sharing his faith in Christ.

Alton is survived by his loving wife, Maria A. (Toni) Laird; his two daughters, Dr. Stephanie M. and her husband, (Benjamin) Copeland, of Irving, Texas, and Jennifer A. and her husband (Paul) Plumley of McLean, Virginia; two grandchildren, Isabella A. Copeland and Clay Alton Plumley; his brother, Donald Laird of Nederland, Texas; his mother-in-law, Eva Garza of Beaumont, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Neva Adeline Lindsey.

Alton was inspirational for me. Though I am not a believer, he made me almost want to be believe. I was in constant awe witnessing his works ranging from his community and church service to his mentorship of the halfway house felonies -- Alton just quietly inspired all around him. He was a humble, honest man with nothing to prove that walked with a strength and conviction few others match.
Alton had humor and grace even in his final hours, expressing concern over in his business, family, and the house plants. Even at deaths door he was organizing and plotting, working and giving orders. Most of all he loved his family. The loss of Alton had a ripple affect leaving this world just that much darker and less idealistic for those of us left behind. If there is a heaven, rest assured, Alton is up there looking down on us quietly judging the way we are moving our lawn. :). RIP big guy, we miss and love you.
