Kristina “Kris” L. Bettes, 49, of Winnie, Texas passed away on Friday, April 4, 2014, after an intense year long battle with cancer. She was born July 9, 1964, to Jeanne Allen and Clifford Calkins, in Denver, Colorado. Kristina had been a resident of the Winnie area for five years.

Kristina and her family moved to Homer, Alaska, in June of 1974. While growing up in Homer, Kris loved fishing and exploring beautiful Kachemak Bay. During her high school years she enjoyed and excelled at playing the clarinet in band and competing on the high school swim team. She broke state records in the one hundred yard relay event and won many other events. Kristina graduated from Homer High School in 1982.

Kristina married William Bettes on December 21, 1986, in Anchorage, Alaska. They moved to Pennsylvania where she successfully climbed the corporate ladder, while working for a large insurance firm, called the Underwriters Group. Kristina and her husband moved to Tennessee, in 1995 and eventually to Winnie, Texas. Throughout her life, Kristina loved boating, enjoying the waters in Alaska, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas. She loved fishing, especially for Alaskan halibut and salmon, gardening, reading, competitive darts, a good joke, and all of her furry four-legged friends. Kris had a generous and compassionate heart. She was a wonderful wife, the best sister anyone could have, a treasured auntie, and a loyal friend. She will be forever missed and always in our hearts.

Survivors include her husband, William “Bill” Bettes of Winnie, Texas; sister, Theresa Ross and her husband, Malcolm, of Homer, Alaska; niece, Mystique Ross; and nephew, Alden Ross, both of Homer, Alaska.

Mrs. Betttes was preceded in death by her parents, Jeanne and Clifford Calkins.

A gathering of Mrs. Bettes’ family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with her memorial service at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Drive, Winnie, Texas. A family committal was held at Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to American Cancer Society, 755 South 11th Street, Suite 212, Beaumont, Texas 77701.

♥ My heart and deepest sympathy goes out to Bill and Miss Sassy, Theresa and family, and all Kris' close friends: may your grieving hearts be soothed by the love, life and memories you shared with such a wonderful, witty, courageous, fun, spirited, supportive and beautiful woman who became a true friend to so many the world over ~ myself included ~ whilst game-playing and sharing stories, pictures, memories, trials and tribulations, chat, laughter and tears (most often with Kris as the result of laughter) and support in 'cyberspace'. Kris will be greatly missed and I can truly say that it was an Honour and a Privilege to have known you. I am so sorry you were not able to win this last battle, Kris, dear, dear Lady x ~ May you Rest In Eternal Peace now you are free from all pain.Your Spirit will Shine Brightly Forever-more ~ You certainly were MS WOW! ~ Fly Free, dear friend, Soar The Heavens, Touch The Stars and I hope you meet-up with my treasured Pink Angel. ~ Love you ~ Peace, Love and Light ~ SPIRIT ON....x Sue a.k.a. Susie Q[uinn] xXx ♥

You can shed tears that she is gone,
Or you can smile because she lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,
Or you can be full of the love that you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her and only that she is gone,
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry, close your mind, be empty and turn your back,
Or you can do what she would want:

smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

I remember Kris from high school and her sense of humor always was appreciated. I will miss her friendship and her many FB contributions which my wife seemed to enjoy more than me.😉
